live everyday like it was your last

Are you looking to live every day like it was the last? If so, then this article is for you.

Want it or not, your time here on Earth is limited. Regardless if you’re a top-notch entrepreneur, a programmer, or a corporation worker – you know neither the day nor the hour. As the great Roman thinker and emperor Marcus Aurelius would put it, death hangs upon thee. That shouldn’t worry you too much, though. Take a step back and try looking at it from a different angle.

Usually you prefer not to think about it. It always seems so distant. However, taking a different perspective can turn out to be a true revelation to you. You must have heard about YOLO (You Only Live Once). Despite the fact that it has been used in memes more often than by people of success, there might be some deeper meaning to it. Living your every day as if it’s your last one is a lofty idea. What does it actually mean?

You’ve got only so much time to be the best you: to achieve your goals and pursue a meaningful path. There’s a finite number of days for you to be happy and satisfied with your life. So start doing it! What should you begin with? This all may sound pretty confusing. Seizing the day starts with small steps.

Here are some ideas that you can implement into your daily life:

How to Live Every Day As If It Was The Last

1. Be Bold

You get only one shot. The challenges that you face sometimes seem overwhelming, but they’re milestones on your path to building your confidence. Many people don’t have the courage to put something at stake. With the ‘YOLO’ mind-set, you don’t have anything to lose. In fact, there’s a lot to gain.

Besides, if you give it a thought, the advantages of boldness are abundant. Every time you take the plunge, you gamble with your own feelings. Each one of us is sometimes scared, yet that doesn’t mean you should be in a standstill. When you push yourself to the edges, you expand your comfort zone. Whether it’s a step-by-step improvement or a huge leap, it’s progress.

Courageous acts make you stronger. It can mean standing up for yourself at work, or taking the responsibility for a difficult family business. Be bold in the present like there’s no tomorrow. The “future you” will thank you for that.

2. Appreciate the Little Things

In this fast-pacing world, the hidden risk of all careers is routine. Tediousness makes you disinterested in life. You gradually forget about what is meaningful. Driving the same jammed streets every morning, surrounded by the same tall sky scrapers, seeing the same faces every day – it can really mess with your head.

Wherever you are, don’t forget to take the time to appreciate little things. It can be the beauty of the flower that’s been on your desk for a week. It can be your child laughing in the backseat of your car. It can be a loving smile on your partner’s face after the day’s work.

When you fall into the whirlwind of routine, be careful not to lose sight of such small pieces of life. Be grateful for them without taking them for granted. This way you’ll derive pleasure from the ordinary. Cherish every day as if it was your last.

3. Trust Your Gut

The hard data and statistics are a valuable source of information, but don’t put all of your trust in them. How often did you feel that something was the right decision? I bet it’s happened to you more times than you can remember. Was it intuition that told you what to do? Maybe some primal instinct was awakened to guide you?

It’s hard to tell. If you’ve got experience in what you’re doing (which you probably do), it means that you know the ropes pretty well. The human ability to learn is fascinating and you should never underestimate your brain’s potential.

Whatever your inner voice is telling you, it might be right. If you still aren’t convinced, try it with small decisions in the beginning. Their consequences are not as grave, and it’s a great way to truly make you follow your heart.

4. Grab Opportunities

The next time somebody offers you a deal, a partnership, or whatever you might be looking for, don’t think twice. Keep in mind that you live as if it was the last day of your life, so why not give coincidence a shot?

It’s those happenstances that may turn out to be exactly what you need. After all, great friendships and unions started from a single handshake. Who knows how your relationships or business will develop after you’ve taken the plunge?

Anxious about the consequences? Of course, don’t you forget about reason and logical thinking. Your actions will for sure have their repercussions. However, when it comes to such once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, in most cases they can be later turned down. There’s always a way out if anything goes wrong. Not seizing them, though, might as well be the next great regret of your life.

So give it a try, you can change your mind later.

5. Be Kind

Marcus Aurelius was a wise guy, taught by dignified stoics since he was a kid. Another lesson of his was – be good while you can. This may sound banal, but it’s deeper than you think. Every day you have to deal with people. You’ve come across rude colleagues and troublesome employees. Maybe you felt the urge to show everybody who the boss is and engage into another hurtful row.

Each time you feel like hurdling abuse, ask yourself: “How do I want to be remembered?”

Do you want to be that person who is a pain for everybody around them? Or do you want to be the good guy, the protagonist of your story? As a leader, your role is to inspire others to follow in your footsteps. Pursue noble values, show respect and understanding in disagreements. Those actions build your reputation.

6. Network

There’s almost eight billion people on Earth right now. You can never tell when or where you’ll meet the love of your life. It’s exactly the same with business partners and mentors. The world is teeming with inspiring human beings, only waiting for you to reach out. So do it!

Be the first one to say “Hi”, ask about their hobbies, show interest. Overcome your shyness (if there’s any of that left) and build connections. Most entrepreneurs’ lifestyle entails travel, so you may never get the chance to speak to some people ever again! Establish bonds as often as possible, because they’re all doors waiting for you to unlock them. You’ve already got the key.

Build your network like it was only today that mattered. Interactions started by yourself are always going to be valuable to yourself – they’re but lessons of human relations!

7. Don’t Procrastinate

You were about to get to work, but all of a sudden you felt the need to drink a cup of coffee. Yes, coffee is what you need. Once you get that, you can get to work. Wait, how about a snack? Go make yourself a sandwich, and then get back to work! Hey, what about that old book collection you inherited after your grandfather? Shouldn’t you take a look at that?

We’ve all been there. There’s that inner primitive voice inside your head trying to persuade you to do everything but what you were supposed to do. You’ve got responsibilities on your shoulders, and they aren’t always pleasant. Apart from that, you’re surrounded by screens and social media from every direction. Those tempting time-consumers are waiting for you to lose focus.

But if it was the very last day of your life, would you like to spend it scrolling through Facebook or eating cereal on your couch? Allow yourself to take a break from time to time, but don’t let those unimportant trivialities take your life away. You’ve got but limited amount of hours in your life, so cherish every one of them. Don’t let your life slip through your fingers.

There you have it, the best ways to live your days like they were you last. Here’s a brief recap of those steps:

  • Be Bold
  • Appreciate The Little Things
  • Trust Your Gut
  • Grab Opportunities
  • Be Kind
  • Expand Your Network
  • Don’t Procrastinate

As you can see, to live every day like it was the last isn’t about doing careless things without caring about the consequences. Being aware of your limited time on Earth to pursue your goals and reach the very top can be a true motivator.

By trying to do the small things mentioned above each day, you’ll see a serious a confidence boost. The braver you are, the more you’re capable of! Don’t be afraid and shape the world around you just the way you want it to be.

Soon you’ll know one thing for sure – impossible doesn’t exist. Focus on having a worthwhile present to guarantee yourself a meaningful future.

Till then,
