This Rudy story can benefit us in a variety of ways; his story can inspire us to dream a little bigger, push a little harder, and fight a little longer. In fact, Hollywood took note and went on to create the 1993 movie, Rudy, which would go on to become a huge blockbuster success.
With that said, if you haven’t seen Rudy yet, and you have 116 minutes to spare, you should watch it. However, in this article, we aim to touch on the key aspects of Rudy’s inspiring story that you can take and use for your benefit today.
The Rudy Story: The Making of a Fighter
Rudy was born on August 23, 1948 in Joliet, Illinois, the state’s third largest city. He was raised in a modest middle-class home with thirteen other siblings to parents Daniel and Betty Ruettiger. He was was the first boy in his family, and was the third child. His father was a hardworking blue-collar miner, and his mother an equally hardworking master-homemaker.
His father’s love of football, particularly Notre Dame football would rub off on the young Rudy Ruettiger. The Fighting Irish would be admired from the Ruettiger living room every game-day weekend during the college season.
There was a reverence for Fighting Irish football in the Ruettiger household. And it was this reverence that would eventually inspire Rudy’s dream of playing for Notre Dame — making the accomplishment one of the greatest glories he could aspire to achieve.
Unfortunately, the odds were stacked against Rudy from the very beginning. Thus, the chasm between him and his dreams would appear nearly impossible to bridge. Not only did Rudy come from a disadvantaged household, where attention and financial resources were hard to come by. But, he also struggled academically. And, as much as he loved football, he was not genetically gifted with superior speed, strength, or size.
Fortunately, what he lacked in physical prowess and academic exceptionalism, he made up for with heart. As a high school football player he would lead his team in tackles, and earn all-conference and all-areas honors as a cornerback, accomplishments that are not just handed out to anybody, nor easy to achieve.
Rudy was a good football player. Of course, he also knew he wasn’t the strongest or the fastest, but he didn’t let these disadvantages completely kill his dreams. He remained hopeful, but he knew he would have to get practical once his got out of high school; as such he enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation in 1968.
In fact, while in the Navy he spent two years overseas in Vietnam, a military experience which he gives credit to for changing his attitude around who he was and what was possible for him.
Rudy Ruettiger: The Dreamer Who Wouldn’t Quit
In 1970, after spending two years in the Navy as a Yeoman, Rudy would head back home to work in the local power plant. However, after witnessed his best friend get crushed to death before his very eyes, he felt called to leave and follow his dream.
It was at this point that he decided to take advantage of his newly earned G.I. Bill. As such, in 1972 he devised a strategy to put it to use to help him fulfill his lifelong dream of playing for the Fighting Irish. So, he enrolled in Holy Cross College in Indiana which was just across the street from the Notre Dame campus. His plan of attack was to get good grades and then transfer to Notre Dame as soon as he could so he could try out for the team.
Rudy Ruettiger set the plan in motion, but it wouldn’t come without setbacks. Rudy would eventually learn that he suffered from a learning disability known as dyslexia while studying at Holy Cross. When Rudy first applied to Notre Dame was denied. But he got back to work, focused on improving his grades and tried again, but again was met with another defeat.
He even tried a third time, but yet again, he was told “No.” But, Rudy was determined not to quit. So, after some time he applied for for a fourth and final time, and as fate would have it, his fourth attempt was the charm. Rudy was finally accepted to Notre Dame, and began his studies there in 1974.
Rudy would then focus his efforts to fulfilling his dream of playing football for the Fighting Irish. He tried out for the team, and after the coaches took a liking to his tenacity and high-effort on every play, they accepted him on their scout team.
Respect Earned, Not Given
Rudy Ruettiger would play his heart out at every scout practice for the team. His indomitable will and pure dedication to the team began to influence his fellow teammates and coaches.
They all took notice, as such, Rudy would eventually succeed in making the team of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Despite Rudy making the team, however, he still had unfinished business. Rudy was determined to make it on the field and play in a game before his time at Notre Dame came to an end. So, he pushed forward to continue earning the admiration of his teammates and coaches.
He would put forth maximum effort, hard work, and perseverance until he finally earned the respect of the whole team. And similar (but not exactly) to what transpired in the movie Rudy, where team members put down their jerseys to request Rudy play in the final game, a single team member by the name of Pat Sarb, went in to the coaches’ office and requested the Rudy take his place so he could dress out for the game.
In addition to this, the team captain, who spoke for the entire team, petitioned the coach (Dan Devine) to allow Rudy a chance to play in the final game.
The Dream, The Struggle, The Victory
As such, when Rudy’s final game arrived on November 8, 1975 when Notre Dame would go head-to-head against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, — after 99% of that final game had already transpired, coach Devine would finally call out to Rudy to put him in. Rudy was ready!
In those final seconds of that final game, Rudy would fulfill his dream of playing for the Fighting Irish. He jumped in on the kick off team at the coaches request. After the kick off, he was allowed to continue on as a defensive end.
On the first play, Rudy’s initial opportunity to tackle the quarterback was close, but Rudy Allen, the quarterback for Georgia Tech was able to get the ball off just after Rudy would come off his block. The next and final play of the game however, Rudy zipped around the corner and sacked the quarterback on the final play of the game. Notre Dame would win that game against Georgia Tech, 24 – 3, and Rudy would gain a win against the odds.
However, the the true victory, was Rudy’s ability to inspire an entire team, community, and countless Fighting Irish fans. And even though he only got on the field for three plays, his struggle allowed him to become the first player in Notre Dame history to be carried off the field by his teammates.

Elon was born in South Africa back in 1971 to a father who was an engineer and a mother who was a nutritionist. Growing up, Elon spent most of his time reading and tinkering with projects when not in school and when his Nany was not watching him. Which according to an interview he did with Rolling Stone , it was not often.
So, at an early age, Elon became fond of Isaac Asimov’s books, which would eventually inspire his futurism. And it was his interest in the future, and his penchant for engineering that his engineer father helped cultivate, along with his eye for design, that would set him up for some grand future achievements.
After attending University for just five months in South Africa, Elon decided to move to Canada to attend Queen’s University. But he didn’t finish his schooling there. In fact, after just two years, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania to finish his schooling. But getting through college wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Elon had to strive to make his way through.
Elon financed his college education through a combination of scholarships, getting loans, and having to work two different jobs at the same time. Fortunately, his sacrifice would eventually pay off, earning himself a degree in Economics and another in Physics.
After these two educational accomplishments, Elon then went on to get into Stanford’s Ph.D. program. But, just after two days into the program he dropped out to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams.

Elon’s initial start-up was an internet company that he, his brother, and a friend went all in on. The company took some time to get off the ground, and in the interim, Elon would struggle financially. Things got so bad for Elon at one point, that the only bed he could afford was the couch in their start-up’s office, and the shower and restroom facilities at his local YMCA.
Despite the low times of this endeavor however, they would eventually find angel investors who backed the company, and clients within the city, and various big name news publishing companies like the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune who saw promise in the company and its useful city guide mapping software.
From this point, it was only a matter of time before Elon and company, were able to sell the start-up to Compaq for $307 million.
The Next Venture
After selling the company, Elon earned a $22 million dollar windfall, and would go on to invest the bulk of that money into his next venture, which was a financial services company he co-founded called X.com. His luck would improve shortly after starting this new venture as they merged with the company that serviced PayPal.com. And just three years after starting up X.com, merging it with PayPal.com, they would sell it off to eBay for $1.5 billion.
The Big Gamble
With the acquisition of PayPal.com, Elon’s net worth would grow to be $123 million. Now, at this point Elon could’ve retired early and rode off into to the sunset and lived happily ever after. But that’s not how legends are made. Instead, Elon would take a huge gamble and invest most if he newfound millions into two separate companies. One of them was Tesla Motors, a fledgling automaker focused on electric transportation, and the other was SpaceX, a companied hellbent on commercial space exploration.
Where most people would leave, Elon leaned in. He poured his money, blood, sweat, and tears into making both companies a success. And his passion for design, engineering, and the future would have him succeed on both fronts.
Tesla, is now one of the most valuable companies in the world valued at close to a trillion dollars ($907 billion), and SpaceX has made progress as well with a recent valuation near $100 billion.
Elon’s big gamble seems to be paying off.
Elon’s Enduring Success
Elon Musk’s success continues to grow as he endlessly pushes the envelope with Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter, and the handful of other vanguard companies he has invested in and co-founded along the way.
So, what’s the success secret to Elon’s enduring success? Well, it must be said, that Elon does has above average intelligence, which has played a large role in his achievements. However, despite his intelligence, Elon excels because of an extreme ambition that is driven by his passion, and ambition that is backed up by an insane work ethic.

In addition to this, Elon focuses most of his energy on activities and ventures that actually matter. He has made it known through commencement speeches and interviews that he does not waste time on things that don’t matter. He says it best with this quote…
“Focus on signal over noise. Don’t waste time on stuff that doesn’t actually make things better.”Tweet Quote
Equally as important, is that Elon does not do things for the money. In fact, he has blatantly stated that money doesn’t matter to him. All he cares about is accomplishing his main objectives and missions in life. So, what helps Elon succeed is his commitment to execution and the superhuman work ethic employs to make things happen. He sums up his work ethic very will with the following quote…
“Work like hell. I mean you just have to put in 80 to 100 hour weeks every week. This improves the odds of success. If other people are putting in 40 hour workweeks and you’re putting in 100 hour workweeks, then even if you’re doing the same thing, you know that you will achieve in four months what it takes them a year to achieve.”Tweet Quote
Lastly, the key aspect that has helped Elon find so much success has been his willingness to take risks. In fact, his whole career has been a series of taking one big risk after another. Indeed, his fearless approach to turning his ideas into reality, and the fearless action he took to execute on those ideas is key in much of Elon’s success. Having sold at least 320 million books, it’s safe to say that Paulo Coelho knows a thing or two about success. We believe success leaves clues, which is why we cover inspiring success stories of people like Paulo Coelho. We also chose Paulo Coelho because he has a great story about choosing to follow one’s dreams that can inspire just about anyone.
In addition to this, we also believe each story possesses within it a few insightful gems that we can leverage to our benefit if we so choose to. So, with that being said, if you’re ready to learn how Paulo Coelho became the world-wide sensation he is today, then let’s dive in.
The Early Years | Paulo Coelho Story
Paulo Coelho was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1947 in a Roman Catholic household. In his early years, like many children, he rebelled against his parents and their teachings. His parents were strict about their religion and faith, and they didn’t approve of his interest in becoming a writer.
Coelho’s father was an engineer, and his parents had plans for him, and writing was not part of that plan. Of course, Coelho didn’t approve of his parent’s traditional and rigid plans for him either. In fact, his opposition to his parents created a lot of conflict between him and his parents.
As he moved into his teens he began hanging around with a troublemaking crowd, and challenging with more and more fervor his parent’s ideas. So much so, that his parents thought he was going crazy.
When Paulo Coelho was 17 years old this conflict came to a boiling point, and his parents ultimately decided that the only way to help him overcome his radical perspectives and staunch rebuking of their ways, and to help him “get it together”, was to have him committed to a psychiatric hospital.
Paulo Coelho would spend three years in this institution, but, it served it’s purpose, at least initially, as he gave up his dreams to become a writer, and pursued the more respectable path of going to law school.
However, in 1970 Coelho dropped out of law school and decided to travel abroad. When he made his way back in in 1972 he would find work writing lyrics for popular Brazilian singers and songwriters.
After a few years however, Paulo Coelho would eventually find work for a variety of companies, including CBS records, whom he stayed with until 1980.
While working various jobs in the late 70’s and early 80’s Coelho would write two books that really went nowhere. (Theater for Education & Hell Archives) Then, in the early 80’s, Coelho would travel the world again.
But this time around, he would have a few spiritual awakenings along the way that would eventually lead him back to his true calling; writing. And it was his 500 mile trek by foot along the Road of Santiago de Compostela in Spain that influenced him most.
Thus, after a string of experiences and serendipitous friendships, Coelho would make his way back to the the faith of his childhood, but at the same time, he also chose to fully reembrace his true calling as a full-time writer.
And after a few years, he would finally publish his first book about his transformational journey, especially as it related to his experience along the famed Spanish pilgrimage; Santiago de Compostela. Coelho appropriately named the book, ‘The Pilgrimage’ and he published it in 1987.
A Dream Fulfilled
‘The Pilgrimage’ didn’t really take off after it was published, so, in 1988, Paulo Coelho would publish his second book which he titled ‘The Alchemist’. Upon publishing his second book, the successful results Coelho was hoping for did not show up right away.
In fact, he was told by the first bookseller to carry his book, that only one person bought a copy after it was released. Despite the dismal results of his second book, Coelho would remain confident in his book.
He chose to be patient, but the results he was expecting was still extremely low, as it took another long six months before that second copy of the book would be sold. Interestingly enough, the person who purchased the second copy was the exact same person who bought the first.
Coelho’s publisher was less patient however, and after a whole year of dismal results, the publisher labeled the book a flop and terminated Coelho’s contract.
But, Coelho was resilient, and didn’t allow that painful experience with failure get him down. Instead, he chose to not give in, and decided to persist. Thus, he made once last heroic effort to pursue his vision and fulfill his dream of being a successful writer. And he backed up his next effort with even more zeal and energy by finding another publisher.
Without a doubt, finding a second publisher to back a book that for all intents and purposes, was a flop, would be a challenge for Coelho. He was met with rejection after rejection in this pursuit.
Fortunately, he finally landed a new publisher, and with it, another golden opportunity to capture his dream. And it was from this point and onward, that Paulo Coelho’s dreams began to be fulfilled.
When Paulo Coelho was 42 years old signs of his persistence paying off finally showed up, with three thousand books selling initially. But the book sales kept growing, slowly but surely. After those first three thousand sales, it turned to 10 thousand sales, then 100 thousand, then a MILLION, then 100 million, as the years went by.
The flood of sales from ‘The Alchemist’ would not abate, and Coelho’s good fortune continues to grow even to this day. He’s since sold over 150 million and counting copies of ‘The Alchemist’, and when you include sales of all of his titles, he’s already sold over 320 million books worldwide.
Success Ethos | The Paulo Coelho Story
Paulo Coelho’s success ethos, a.k.a. his secret to success, can be summed up in a few words; namely self-belief, having the courage to follow one’s dreams, and persistence.
Had Coelho not believed in himself, he never would have taken the action to follow his dreams. But beyond that, had he not persisted, and had faith in his work, he never would have pushed past those initial obstacles that typically deter the undetermined.
Thus, without self-belief, the courage to follow his heart, and the will to see it through, he never would have have experienced the staggering success he now enjoys.
With that said, here a few Paulo Coelho quotes that we feel highlights his success best. Enjoy.
The essence of the quote above is demonstrated by Paulo Coelho’ believing himself to be a writer. He wanted to be one more than anything, and he believed in his vision enough to act on it. As a result, he became what he believed himself to be; a very successful writer.
“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” – Paulo CoelhoTweet Quote
This quote above speaks to Paulo Coelho’s belief that what you wants, also wants you. It’s a powerful message that belies the fact that there is magic in believing. In addition to this, it also hints at the power of acting on one’s desires, and that when you do, good things will happen because the Universe has your back.
“It’s only those who are persistent and willing to study things deeply, who achieve the master work.” – Paulo CoelhoTweet Quote
This last quotes speaks to Coelho’s experience with persistence; demonstrating that success and mastery are not things that happen overnight. And that before one achieves success and mastery, the price of persistence must first be paid.

In addition to this, we also believe every story possesses hidden insights that can teach us, guide us, and benefit us in incredible ways. So, with that being said, if you’re ready to learn how Grant Cardone became an above average person let’s dive in.
Growing Pains | Grant Cardone Success Story
Grant Cardone grew up in a little town called Lake Charles in the state of Louisiana. He and his twin brother were the youngest out of five children. At the age of 10, Cardone lost his father, and his mother was forced to support 5 children alone, with no education, and no work experience. It was a combination that led to very slim prospects for Grant’s success growing up. Fortunately, his mother found a way to make it work. But needless to say, Cardone grew up poor, and in an environment that was less than ideal.
And it was this environment, and the trauma he faced from losing his father early in life, and his oldest brother a few years later, that led him towards a self-destructive and downward spiraling path. And so from the age of 15 to 25, Cardone found himself in bad company, making bad decisions, and addicted to drugs.
However, there was one traumatic event that would act as a catalyst for reversing the direction of his life. And this event would occur one rainy night when Cardone was walking home. As he walked home, a friend of his set him up to get robbed at gun point.
And in his attempts to fight off the armed robber, Cardone was severely beaten with a pistol and left for dead. Cardone ended up in the hospital for three days and would need over 70 stiches. His face was so damaged from the robbery, that when his mother came to visit, she couldn’t even recognize him.
This experience was a major turning point for Cardone. But the final straw that would see Cardone check himself into a rehab center was the day his mother kicked him out of her house.
Grant Cardone was 25 years old when he finally decided to clean his life up. After he got out of rehab, Cardone committed to living a sober life in pursuit of his potential. And even though he felt like a loser at the time, he knew, deep down inside that he was meant to do more with his life.
As such, upon his release from rehab he chose to cut out all negative influences from his life. He stopped hanging around his drug addict friends, he stayed away from his enemies, and all those negative influences and environments that in the past kept him going back to the comfort of drugs like clock work.
Now after deciding to turn his life around things didn’t automatically become full of sunshine and rainbows for Cardone. He still had to find an avenue to pursue his potential. Cardone had his degree in accounting, but such jobs were limited at the time. And, with the economy being slow with unemployment at 24%, Cardone didn’t have the luxury of being selective.
As such, he landed a job as a car sales person, even though he detested the decision, because he had an accounting degree. However, he took some advice he got from his mother early on, and applied it to his situation. And the advice was this… “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.”
As such, he got to work learning as much as he possibly could about selling, how to influence people, along with everything there was to know about the automobile industry. After he saw his income double from $3,000 to $6,000 per month, he knew he figured one of the most powerful tools for becoming successful; applied knowledge. And, through that effort and investment in knowledge, Cardone eventually became one of the best car salesmen in the country.
Towards Becoming Self-Made
Cardone’s success within the industry would skyrocket. But eventually he got fired after trying to do the right thing by telling the owner of a company that another sales person was stealing from him.
But Cardone didn’t let this setback diminish his enthusiasm or momentum. And instead decided to never become dependent on another person or company again.
As such, he started his own sales consulting business, and began aggressively selling his sales strategies across the country. And shortly there after, Cardone paved a way for himself as a self-made man.

Success Ethos | Cardone Success Story
Grant Cardone’s business took off, and his businesses were doing so well that he eventually became a millionaire by the age of 30. But he didn’t become a millionaire just because his businesses were earning large amounts of income.
The truth is, nobody automatically becomes a millionaire just because they have an income or a business. Nope, but Grant Cardone became a millionaire because he was disciplined with his money, and because he had a millionaire mindset.
Essentially, every time he paid himself from his businesses earnings, he would consider himself “broke” immediately after, because he’d shove all his extra money into down payments for investments, primarily in the form of real estate.
Cardone would do this for years, until his assets topped a million dollars. And it is this same simple process that he uses to this day; which has helped him achieve nearly a billion dollars in his investment ventures. He strives to make as much money as he can, so he can invest as much as he can to build his investment empire, it’s that simple.
With that being said, our Grant Cardone story wouldn’t be complete without a few wise words from the man himself. As such, here are a few supporting Cardone Quotes to help sum up his success ethos so you can follow suit:
“Until you become completely obsessed with your mission, no one will take you seriously. Until the world understands that you’re not going away—that you are 100 percent committed and have complete and utter conviction and will persist in pursuing your project—you will not get the attention you need and the support you want.” – Grant CardoneTweet Quote
“Every time I get money, I go broke again because I shove it into this real estate thing [Cardone Acquisitions].” – Grant CardoneTweet Quote
“Rich people don’t get rich by accident and poor people don’t stay poor by accident.” – Grant CardoneTweet Quote

No I.D. took Kanye under his wing and taught him how to produce beats and experiment with hip hop productions. West became friends with another up-and-coming rapper, Jay Z, and the two would often freestyle together.
Ultimately, Kanye started creating beats for other artists in the Chicago area and formed a rap group known as the Go-Getters. The group released their first and only album in 1999.
Although Kanye West was successfully working as a producer, he wanted to step into the limelight and be a rapper himself. He tried to convince Jay Z to sign him to his record label, Roc-A-Fella Records, but Jay Z was reluctant to add him to the roster. He eventually relented and signed Kanye in 2002.
On October 23rd, 2003. Kanye experienced a grave car accident that left him with a shattered jaw. He required surgery to reconstruct his face and was bedridden for weeks.
Kanye left the L.A. studio at around 3 am in a rented Lexus, after finishing a late-night session with Peedi Crack, Beanie Sigel, and The Black Eyed Peas. Just blocks away from the W Hotel, he was cut off and collided head-on with another car.
As a result of the accident, his face needed reconstructive surgery. It took Kanye weeks to recover from the accident. Because he did not have health insurance, he had to foot the bill himself.
West used this time to reflect on his life and career. He decided that he needed to focus on his own music and not just produce beats for other artists. He realized that the music he had previously made wouldn’t have a major impact on the world if he were to die in that tragic accident. From this moment forward, Kanye dedicated himself to making the best music of his career.
He would never play small and he proved this by writing and recording several of his most popular hits while still recovering from the accident.
The Rise To Fame
Many of the demos that Kanye made with No I.D. alongside his producing experience, became the basis of his own solo career. He started working on his own music and released his debut album The College Dropout in 2004.
The album was a huge success, both commercially and critically. It received positive reviews from music critics and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. It went on to sell over four million copies in the United States. In addition to this, it was also certified 4-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Kanye’s second album, Late Registration, was released in 2005 and was also a huge success. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and received positive reviews from music critics. The album has since been certified triple platinum by the RIAA.
In 2007, Kanye released his third album, Graduation. The album was again a huge success and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It has since been certified double platinum by the RIAA.
Kanye’s fourth studio album, 808s & Heartbreak, was released in 2008. The album was a departure from his previous work and featured more electronic and autotuned vocals. Although it was not as commercially successful as his previous albums, it still received positive reviews from music critics.
Kanye’s fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, was released in 2010 to critical acclaim. It too debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and became one of the highest-rated albums of all time by music critics.
His sixth studio album, Yeezus, was released in 2013 and received positive reviews from music critics. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over two million copies in the United States.
The seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo, was released in 2016. It also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and has since been certified platinum by the RIAA.
The Kanye West’s Entrepreneurial Path
Following the release of his debut album, Kanye West began designing and manufacturing his own line of clothing and sneakers. Introducing Shutter Shades in 2008, a sleek new sneaker that incorporates traditional shutter-style sunglasses.
He then produced the “Air Yeezy” line in 2009, a highly successful shoe that lasted until 2013. The Adidas Yeezy Boosts were officially released on December 3, 2013, after months of anticipation and rumors.
West has also released several fashion lines, including DW by Kanye West, Pastelle Clothing, and A.P.C. Kanye West. He has also been involved in the creative direction of numerous fashion brands, such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Nike.
He also founded a production company and record label, “GOOD Music”, in 2004. The label has since signed artists such as John Legend, Big Sean, Pusha T, Kid Cudi, and Mos Def.
Kanye West and his mother started the “Kanye West Foundation” (now called the Dr. Donda West Foundation) in 2003. It aims to provide access to arts and music education for children in low-income communities.
He also founded “Got Bars” in 2013, a free music writing program that helps young people in high-risk areas of Chicago learn how to write and record their own music.

THE RIHANNA SUCCESS STORY
Rihanna is a famous singer, songwriter, and actress. She has sold over 200 million records and has won numerous awards, including eight Grammy Awards. In addition to her music career, Rihanna has also launched several successful businesses, including the fashion line Savage X Fenty and the beauty line Fenty Beauty. How was it that this young woman from Barbados was able to achieve such incredible success? Read on to learn more about her remarkable journey to fame.
The Early Years
Rihanna was born in Saint Michael, Barbados, on February 20, 1988. When she was just a child, she enjoyed singing and exploring around her neighborhood. She loved music and was a creative spirit from a young age.
However, life wasn’t always carefree for Rihanna. She witnessed her father’s alcoholism, which carried over to domestic abuse. Her father regularly hit Rihanna’s mother, to the point where it became commonplace. The authorities were never involved since the family didn’t want their conflicts to be put on public display. At times, this violence extended to Rihanna as well.
Despite these conflicts, Rihanna’s father imparted a strong entrepreneurial spirit onto her. He would sell clothing on the side of the road, and she would oftentimes join him. She also began to sell small items and sweets at school for a profit, helping to contribute to her family’s income.
Eventually, Rihanna’s father became consumed by his additions. He regularly chose drugs and alcohol over providing funds for housing and food, which put tremendous stress on Rihanna as the oldest sibling of the family. Although her father would eventually clean up and try to make things right, the damage had been done.
At the same time, Rihanna was experiencing bullying on a regular basis at school. Because she was mixed and much lighter-skinned than her classmates, they would often call her derogatory names.
This led to Rihanna developing a tough exterior, which would eventually become one of her defining characteristics. However, she harbored depression and anxiety that manifested as headaches and excruciating migraines.
Despite the challenges she faced, Rihanna was determined to make a name for herself. During her high school years, Rihanna loved to sing with her friends for fun. She formed a musical group with two other classmates which gave her ample opportunity to refine her talent. This was both a healing outlet for her and a source of joy.
Her life changed drastically after she met Evan Rogers, a New York City-based music producer. While Rogers and his wife Jackie were vacationing in Barbados in 2003 for Christmas, they happened to run into each other. He was blown away by Rihanna’s voice and offered her the chance to record some tracks in New York that upcoming spring.
Rihanna composed almost a dozen songs with Rogers and his partner Carl Sturken. She began searching for a label that would distribute her music. Rihanna came into contact with Shawn Carter, popularly known as Jay-Z, who was president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings. The rapper was quick to offer her a contract, which led to her debut release “Pon De Replay” in 2005.
Her debut album, “Music of the Sun” followed shortly after and was a commercial success. The album reached the top ten in multiple countries and sold over two million copies worldwide. Rihanna had made it big and she was only 17 years old.
The Rise to Fame
Rihanna’s second album, “A Girl like Me” was released in 2006. The album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and sold over two million copies worldwide. It featured the hit singles “SOS” and “Unfaithful”.
However, it was Rihanna’s third album “Good Girl Gone Bad” that catapulted her to global superstardom. The album topped charts in over fifteen countries and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America. It spawned the hit singles “Umbrella”, “Take a Bow”, and “Disturbia”.
Rihanna’s fourth studio album, “Rated R” was released in 2009 to critical acclaim. The album featured a more edgy sound and Rihanna collaborated with a number of artists such as Slash and will.i.am. It yielded the hit singles “Hard” and “Rude Boy”.
By this point, Rihanna had become one of the most popular and successful singers in the world. She had won numerous awards and was ranked as one of the 100 most powerful celebrities by Forbes.
In 2012, Rihanna released her fifth studio album “Unapologetic”. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned the hit singles “Diamonds” and “Stay”.
Rihanna has released eight studio albums to date and shows no signs of slowing down. She is one of the best-selling artists of all time with over 280 million records sold worldwide.
The Entreprenurial Path
Rihanna has also ventured into other business ventures, and this is where the majority of her massive billion dollar net worth originates from. She is the richest woman entrepreneur behind Oprah Winfrey and is the wealthiest female musician in the world.
Rihanna has a number of business ventures which include her makeup line Fenty Beauty, lingerie line Savage x Fenty, and luxury fashion brand Fenty.
Rihanna made her business debut in 2011 when she released her first fragrance, Reb’l Fleur – the scent sold $80 million in the first year. The following year, she released another scent, Rebelle, and has since launched almost a dozen fragrances and another is on the way through her beauty brand, Fenty.
As a creative director, she has served at Puma, Mac, River Island, Armani, CoverGirl, and Dior. These connections helped her to learn the business and develop key partnerships.
In 2017, Rihanna founded her own makeup brand known as Fenty Beauty. The brand focused on the inclusivity of all women’s skin tones and became a trendsetter for women of color. The brand debuted with 40 foundation shades and has now expanded to include concealer, highlighters, lipstick, and more.
Her clothing brand, Savage x Fenty, is also popular for its inclusivity. The line features lingerie and sleepwear in a range of sizes – from XS to XXXL.
