LACK OF MOTIVATION? GET MORE SLEEP

Published

on

Recently, I was struggling to wrap up an article I was writing.  For some reason, I couldn’t muster up the required energy, focus, and motivation to string together those necessary words to finish the task at hand.

MOTIVATION DROUGHT?

I sat there in front of my computer, jotting down a few motivational words from here and there.  I even pulled together a few paragraphs.  But it just wasn’t flowing.  In fact was painstaking.

There just wasn’t any life and excitement behind what I was putting down on that blank document.

Have you ever had a motivational drought, maybe you can relate?

I wondered, “Is this it?  Is all my motivation to fire up and encourage others gone?”

Nah, that wasn’t it.

The next thought was, “Perhaps I’ve ran out of ideas.  Maybe I am just lacking creative inspiration?”

Well, recent studies have extolled the benefits of walking to increase our creativity, so, I went for a nice stroll around the block.  I thought it might perk up the creative juices.

When I got back from the walk the creative juices were flowing, but it didn’t make a difference.  The ideas were there.  But the energy to execute?  Nope, the energy was not.

I knew the piece I was working on was inspiring, but I just didn’t have the fire to pull it all together.

Even at the gym later that day, I noticed I just wasn’t 100% committed to making the best of the session.  I walked in to the gym, thinking, “These muscles gonna-get-worked-today! I am gonna teach them a lesson, shooooot!”

But the reality was the opposite.  I left early an didn’t give every muscle that attention and workout they deserved.

The day was just about over when I realized why I didn’t feel like writing that day, why I lacked the motivation to do those things I am typically determined to do.   I realized I wasn’t lacking inspiration or the purpose to do the deed.

LACK OF ENERGY -> LACK OF MOTIVATION

What I was lacking though, was energy.  And that lack of energy was transforming into a lack of motivation.

It finally dawned on me that all this lack of motivation was caused by a simple lack of sleep.

It all clicked after remembering how late I got to bed the night before.  And how it took me longer than normal to fall asleep that night, as my mind was buzzing about a new and exciting promotion I was planning.  That and the fact that I was yanked out of the cozy REM sleep I just fell into, after an alarm randomly went off at 2:30 am.

Yes my friend, it was sleep; there was without a doubt a lack of it.  And that lack of sleep was causing all this lack in motivation.  As such, I want to stress some things on sleep today, and the connection between sleep and motivation.

NO LACK OF FOOLISH PRIDE

Look, I am a person who has both entrepreneurial and spartan-like inclinations, and I’ve always prided myself on being able to work late into the night.   The fact that the quote below is one of my all-time favorites, doesn’t help either:

I’ve always enjoyed the feeling of working hard and late into the night while my competitors slept.  It has always been a thought that fires me up.   Knowing I am not the most talented person at what I do, I’ve always made up for it with effort and a willingness to work longer than others.

I’ve always been the one who is quick to say, “Ehhh, sleep is for the weak”, or “I’ll sleep when I am dead.”, especially when someone suggests I should get to bed earlier or get more sleep.

This recent experience with a lack sleep though, and how it impacted my motivation, has me wondering if my late night strives have a form of foolish pride.

I did some research to see if this was the case.  And sure enough, there is data out there that suggests our motivation can be impacted by how much sleep we get.

WANT MORE MOTIVATION?  GET MORE SLEEP

One of the articles suggested that when we are not well rested, it can make the simple tasks we habitually do more challenging to execute.   One study found that getting sufficient levels of sleep is directly linked with our ability to be self-disciplined, and self-discipline is a big part of motivation.

You could be excited to get something done, but without the discipline to see it through, your motivation is half-baked.

Another study also suggested that a lack of sleep impacts cognitive performance.  Basically, the less sleep you get, the more impaired your cognitive performance will be.  In other words, the less you sleep, the less effective your brain will be at performing.

When you deprive yourself of sufficient levels of sleep, it impacts your ability to focus, it changes your moods, your judgement, and eventually your sense of well-being.

If motivation is the driving force by which we achieve our goals, then we are clearly diminishing that driving force when we deprive ourselves of sufficient hours of the sleep.

So what does sufficient levels of sleep look like?

Well, If you want to perform at a level that is great, you need to at least sleep for eight!

MOTIVATION REQUIRES QUALITY SLEEP TOO

But, it is not all about quantity.  Quality is important too.  If you are in your bed for eight hours, but you are only getting four hours of solid sleep because someone or something is interrupting your sleep cycles, you’ll eventually experience a little thing called sleep deprivation.

If you have young toddlers, well, there’s not much you can do to reduce those mid-night interruptions.  However, there are a few habits you can start doing prior to going to sleep that can improve how fast you fall asleep.  And when you follow these habits, you’ll increase the overall quality of sleep you get throughout the night.

So here are few:

1. Get Outside More:

The first thing you can start doing more of, is getting outside more.  By getting outside more you’ll start getting proper exposure to sunlight.  And proper exposure to sunlight will naturally help you sync up with your natural biological and circadian rhythms.  These rhythms are kept in balance by the amount of melatonin you get.  And the amount of melatonin you get is impacted by quality time spent in the sun.

When we are stuck in doors all day staring at our computers and electronic devices, we disrupt our circadian rhythms, and this eventually impacts the quality of our sleep.  So get adventurous and get outside more.

2. Create a Sleep Routine:

By having a solid routine for when you go to sleep and when you wake up, you’ll create the habit of always getting good sleep.  When you make getting sufficient sleep a priority, you’ll be able to turn it into a habit.  And when you create a habit of getting quality and quantity sleep, you’ll reduce the chances of creating an eventual sleep shortage.  And sleep shortages can happen unexpectedly after you’ve accumulated way too many days of getting little or low-quality sleep sessions.

3. Turn Off Electronic Devices:

Electronic devices like computers, T.V.s, and your smart phones, give off artificial light that can throw off your melatonin production.  When you expose yourself to these devices just before bed, you increase the chances of having your melatonin disrupted.  This is important to know, because the more you disrupt your melatonin, the lower it gets, and the lower it gets the less sleepy you’ll feel.

And if you are like me, and you don’t feel sleepy when it is time to go to sleep, well, you won’t  want to go to sleep.  So, retire those electronic devices early my friend.

4. Wind Down:

Winding down is super important, but I’ll be the first to admit, it is hard to do.  And if I am truly honest, I suck at this.  However, it is still a good practice to strive for.

When you give yourself a chance to wind down before you turn the lights off, you set the stage for efficiency.  Sure, you’ll spend a few extra minutes (that may seem wasteful at first) prepping yourself for sleep, but you’ll make up for it by gaining more time being asleep.  Lying awake in bed, with a racing mind is inefficient.  It’s inefficient because you are just lying in bed wasting time not getting any sleep, and not doing anything productive.  So, winding down is essential.

A good way to do this is to read a book, do some journaling, or just meditate.  Do these types of activities right before bed, and you’ll calm your mind and create a mental ambiance more conducive to falling asleep fast.

5. Watch What You Eat

Some experts say eating right before bed is bad for your sleep, while others swear that if they don’t have food in their bellies, they won’t sleep well either.  The situation most likely depends on the person.

If you are going to eat before you hit the sack (or in the middle of the night), Kris J. Simpson, author of the ‘All Inclusive Diet’ suggests that the food you eat before bedtime will affect the quality of your sleep.  So pay attention to what you eat.  If you do eat right before bed, Kris recommends you keep it low-protein and high-tryptophan.

For additional ways to improve your overall quality sleep, check out this book, ‘All Inclusive Diet’.  It has an excellent chapter on sleep, along with a bunch of other strategies for creating a well-balance diet and lifestyle that can help you reach your potential.

FINAL WORDS ON SLEEP MOTIVATION

It’s obvious that when we feel tired, we know we need to get some more sleep.  It’s instinctual.

But, what isn’t so obvious, is that when you feel unmotivated and unwilling to do what you love to do, or what you made up your mind to achieve, it may just be due to a lack of sleep.   Indeed, lack of sleep can lead to a lack of motivation.

You know this goal achievement stuff is serious business. And if you’re serious about reaching your aims, knowledge on potential obstacles and pitfalls can benefit you.  Depriving ourselves of sleep is such an obstacle, especially for an ambitious soul like you.

Showing up day in and day out drained and unmotivated can never lead to the reaching your aims.  So use this information to stay motivated and in the game.

Till next time,

Best Motivational Videos Ever

Welcome to The STRIVE and our unique list of what we believe are some of the best motivational videos ever.  But, before we get into them we want to have a quick chat with you about motivation in general.

Motivation Can Be Optimized

We believe true motivation begins from within. But, we also believe it can be optimized with motivation hacks like videos, movies, or music. In fact, there is a famous quote regarding motivation, which makes this point well, and it goes like this… “People often say that motivation doesn’t last.  Well, neither does bathing, that’s why we recommend it daily.”  This quote is from Zig Ziglar, one of best motivational speakers of the 21th century. The quote sums up a point that we aim to convince you of, and that is, this…  Motivation needs to be digested on the daily to keep you fired up towards your goals.

Definition of Motivation - Videos

Of course, we believe that true motivation always begins from within.  And that our strongest motivation to achieve will come when we have a crystal-clear vision of exactly what it is that we are trying to accomplish. However, we also believe, that we can rely on external resources to optimize our motivational levels.

Internal + External Motivation = Optimal Motivation

Optimal motivation is the state of maintaining the highest level of intensity and drive towards the achieving of one’s goals in the least amount of time. And it can be achieved when we combine both a strong and clear vision for what we want to do, with external stimulus to keep us primed for moving forward at the pace and intensity in which we began our quest to achieve our grand goals.

In other words, we can always use external motivation as the kick in the pants we need to stay on track to achieve our goals with the enthusiasm and within the time frames we initially set out to achieve them.

Therefore, to help you maintain optimal levels of motivation, we’ve pulled together a list of the 10 best motivational videos ever made.

18.) Eminem, ‘Lose Yourself’
