HOW TO OVERCOME FEAR – FOR GOOD THIS TIME
The babel of the crowd is loud as the host nervously introduces the names of the upcoming speakers. You’re standing backstage with your fellow co-presenters, the air thick with unease. You hear your name, and immediately your heart starts racing. Breath shallow, hands trembling, you’re quick to recall just how hard it is to overcome fear when the amygdala takes over and your fight-or-flight response goes into overdrive.
Sound familiar? If so, it’s probably because you’re among 77% of the population who suffer from the fear of public speaking or, if it’s bad enough, among those who deem speaking in front of a crowd as worse than death.
The Default for Most of Us Is Fear
Of course, the scenario illustrated above is by no means the only way in which fear reigns and monopolizes what limited mental and emotional capital we have. There are a lot of other instances in which that little rabble-rouser, subtly or not-so-subtly, enacts its Machiavellian schemes.
Take the fear of rejection, for example, which we all share as a quality of being human. Or the fear of not being good enough. How often does that one rear its ugly head, if you’re honest enough with yourself?
No matter who you are, there are core fears that are running you right now. They are coloring your experience of yourself and of the world, whether you’re currently aware of them or not. (This includes social anxiety, by the way, which at its root is nothing more than the fear of being judged.)
Overcoming Fear Is Often a Fool’s Errand, But…
The good news is they can be conquered. Yet far too many people fail to overcome that hump of uncertainty as to whether they can really stop feeling afraid. Therefore, most just revert to inaction and fall back to ground zero.
Now the reason this happens, as far as I’m concerned, is that most advice out there on how to annihilate fear is B.S. Straight up.
It’s myopic, and is rarely effective, if ever. It tells you to fight your fears—or worse, to act as though they didn’t exist. But how useful is it really to do anything when you’re unable to think straight for five full seconds?
“Desensitizing” yourself to your fears is another one that I can’t help but chuckle at. Because what happens when you stop putting yourself in scary situations for an extended period of time?
Back to terrified square one.
The results are not so permanent, unfortunately. You yourself have probably been in a few situations when you thought you were over a particular fear.
But, as it turned out, it just so happened to have been dogging your every step all along, hiding beneath the surface.
The Solution to Our Predicament May Surprise You (Or Not)
So, how do you do it? How do you overcome fear permanently and finally get out of your own way?
I’m glad you asked. And I can confidently answer by stating that the number-one, most effective way to vaporize your fears is meditation.
Now hold on a second—I realize this might not have been the magic bullet you were hoping for, the “secret” you expected I might have been building up to, but hear us out.
There’s a fundamental truth about fear that you should always be aware of. All irrational fear is something you’ve learned from two teachers that have been more or less outside your circle of influence: social conditioning and past trauma.
For brevity’s sake, as well as the purpose of this article, I’ll not dive into explaining those just yet (which I’m sure are raising mighty questions for you at the moment). Instead, let’s just focus on how you overcome fear.
Which, as I’ve not so subtly alluded to, is by sitting alone in a room and being mindful of your thoughts and, more importantly, your emotions.
What Is Learned Can Be Unlearned
Fear is something you’ve learned over the course of your life—the key term being “learned” here. What this implies is that it can also be unlearned.
To be more precise, core fears are nothing more than emotions you’ve been suppressing or repressing into your subconscious mind for basically your entire life.
The goal is to therefore unbottle said emotions and to process them fully, after which they’ll cease their tyrannical ways with you. Hence the solution being mindfulness-based meditation.
Meaning you’re going to sit down in a room, with zero distractions, and you’re going to spend some time reflecting on your deepest fears as well as your worst-case scenarios—ideally with your eyes closed.
As you do, you’re going to notice different sensations e.g. heart beating, tingling, increased body temperature, and so on in your body.
Good. Your job is to focus on those—and tune out everything else, at least for the time being.
A few pointers. Do not:
- Resist the sensations; just let them do their thing, no matter how intense they get
- Label the sensations as “fear”; just focus on them and ignore the temptation to judge anything going on inside your body
- Try to change them or fix them. All that you need to do is experience them, without waiting for them to change or do anything whatsoever
Treat Fear Nonjudgmentally, and You Will Beat It like Nobody’s Business
A great way to do this is to imagine as though you wanted to be feeling those fears. I don’t care how eccentric that sounds, because it works.
In any case, you’ll eventually come to realize the way to overcome fear is to actually experience fear and let it run its course. As counterintuitive as that is, you actually do it not by fighting it, not by resisting it—and certainly not by ignoring it—but by letting go of it.
Because you’ll also come to realize that emotions are nothing but temporary sensational occurrences in your body that, if given your permission, will pass through you unhindered. In other words, you won’t have to suffer through them anymore.
It’s just that no one taught us how to properly deal with them. And all our lives we’ve been seeing nothing but people escaping themselves and telling us to do so when things get a tad too icky. So, is it any wonder that so many people are continually held back by themselves? And that even more people don’t ever get to truly overcome their fears?
The Fruits of Your Labor
This is by no means an “easy” process, as I’m sure you’ve guessed by now. However, the more you do it, the less and less you’ll find that of that emotional charge in situations that so often merit freaking out from your end.
It kind of works like magic—except that it’s not, because letting go of emotions is as natural as taking a dump after your first cup of coffee. (Again, no one taught us how to deal with emotions when we were being potty trained, because most people just don’t know better.)
Stop Fighting Fear and It Will Stop Fighting Back
The idea, then, is to keep peeling back all those layers of fear-administered resistance until you reach gold, i.e., that childlike you who felt so high on life that they couldn’t really give a rat’s ass if person X didn’t laugh at their joke or if person Y didn’t respond to their text messages after their first date.
And why should they? They harbor no worries, after all. They don’t have to overcome fear because they don’t have it.
Oh, and age isn’t really a factor here because the yardstick for confidence—which is the absence of fear—isn’t validated by your intellect.
It’s governed by your emotional mastery.
We humans are primarily emotional beings. If we’re emotionally out of whack, our life soon follows suit, no matter the heights of our IQ.
So, master your emotional self in the manner I discussed above, and your life will change. I mean it.

The issue stems from letting these fears run rampant. The mind requires evidence to make conclusions, without facing your fears the resulting anxiety begins to multiply. Realize that fears are untested thoughts and the control they have over you starts to dwindle.
2) Your Fears Want the Best
Fears do attempt to stop us from bettering ourselves but they want us to become the best version of ourselves. It’s irony at its best. Let fear control you or control your fear and be rewarded.
The gut feeling that you’re scared is how you know you’re on the right track. You’re venturing into the unknown, the mind feels it’s at risk. Give the mind the evidence it needs to stop being scared. Let your mind make evidence-based conclusions and understand that the projections we imagine don’t hold up in reality.
3) You Grow in Discomfort
How do you know you’re making progress? You feel uncomfortable.
Facing your fears is the ultimate discomfort. You’re letting your mind know that you are willing to object comfort. Letting yourself be uncomfortable goes against the grain, your entire reality is at risk.
And you know what? Let your reality get shattered. Let the mind see that your fears are nothing but jumped-the-gun conclusions. The more you face your fears, the more you begin embracing them. The growth you gain by tackling your discomfort is incomprehensible.
4) You Make Your Own Reality
Are you going to sit patiently and hope good things come to you?
Or would you rather defy reality and get what it is you want out of life?
Overcoming your fears is the difference between winners and losers. No one will live your life for you, you must make yourself be heard. Without ever taking risks, you’ll be right where you started.
Instead of sitting quietly, ask your boss for the raise you deserve. Ask the girl/guy out that you’ve been eyeing for the past few weeks. Sign up for that rock climbing class.
Opportunities are ripe for the taking.
5) Fear is Your Guiding Light
Embrace your fears. Begin a romantic relationship with the fact that you feel human. Start loving the feeling inside of your stomach that’s attempting to keep you safe. Fear wants you to stay right where you are, it’s telling you exactly what you need to know.
Walking right into your fears rather than running. When emotions are left undealt with, they run rampant. It’s your mission to understand yourself better, to dive deep into uncomfortable emotions. Thrive in your fear.
6) Be a Badass
The amount of self-confidence you gain from fear busting is immense. You’ll go from sitting in a corner, paralyzed from fear to understanding that your fears on a deep level are helping you rather than hurting. You can become a badass by simply choosing to take baby steps towards overcoming your deepest fears.
You can also fake it till you make it, walk with a bit more swagger. Think, walk, and act like the badass you want to be, and you’ll become it.
You only have one life to live. It’ll take you a split-second of your time to face fear. You’re trading off a second of your life for self-confidence that lasts a lifetime. It’s hard to say no to that!
7) Change Your Perspective
Change your perspective. If you don’t feel fear, something is wrong.
Fear drives us to jump. Without this compelling urge to investigate, to make a change, we would never strive to better ourselves. Imagine what your life would look like without fear, it’d be boring as hell!
Most people don’t realize the incredible transformational power that fear holds. The ones that seek fear are the ones that seek opportunities and take risks. Risk-taking is how you develop intuition. So, strive to see fear from a different perspective.
Feel the fear, and do that thing that you fear anyway.
8) Build a Social Circle that Pushes You
You need to find likeminded people who are also pushing their boundaries. These friends are the people who will be there to remind you that your fear is unsubstantiated. There will be moments where you need that extra push off the proverbial cliff.
It’s easy to give advice but to practice what you preach can be difficult. Find a group of people who are pushing themselves constantly as they will push you when needed. Pushing the envelope gets a bit easier when a friend reminds you that you’ll be ok in the end.
9) Face Your Fear TODAY
Time gets faster as we grow older. Blink and you might miss the next few years.
You don’t have time to wait. Life will be over before you know it. You’ll want to relish the action you took and the braveness you showed throughout your life. You won’t remember the times that you sat at home with your favorite ice cream watching Netflix. The memories that stick are ones that impact our lives.
How many years of staying in your comfort zone need to go by before you take action?
You’ll be ok. Your fear wants the best in you. You won’t recognize yourself if you continue facing your fears, day after day. The best version of yourself is waiting to be unleashed.
