HOW TO BECOME A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER

how to become a motivational speaker

Many people get started on the path of becoming a motivational speaker mainly because they want to inspire people with their strong speeches.  I mean, who wouldn’t want to be considered an inspirational rockstar?

Without a doubt, motivational speakers play a huge role not only in inspiring people, but also in communicating important academic and political insights that can benefit society. This is probably why so many people consider becoming one.  But, becoming one is not as easy at it looks.  If fact, motivational speaking is one of the most challenging jobs in the world today, which is exactly why professional speakers get paid the big bucks.

So what about you?  Have you ever thought about becoming a motivational speaker?

So You Wanna Become a Motivational Speaker?

If so, know this, one cannot simply become a great motivational speaker just because they’d like to be. No, to become a great speaker, you have to make the decision to be committed to the process of becoming one.  Seriously, you could be the most motivated person on the planet, but you won’t be able to call yourself a masterful motivational speaker until you actually master the art of delivering speeches.

So, if becoming a motivational speaker is something you’d like to aspire for, know that it is crucial to learn everything there is to know about the industry, and be eager to master the craft.

If you are naturally driven towards motivating people and enjoy public speaking a great deal, then this could most definitely be the best career option for you.  But, if you aren’t so sure that it is, this guide will help you discover the areas you should pay attention to in order to become a wildly successful motivational speaker.

What Exactly Is a Motivational Speaker?

First and foremost, becoming a motivational speaker is not everyone’s cup of tea. Normally, people who opt for this career choice have tons of experiences that they share with others in order to inspire and uplift them. It’s a fact that success stories are often key to making a person become better in their daily life no matter how messed up their lives may be at the moment.

Typically, the experiences that motivational speakers convey are not your run of the mill anecdotes. No, they look at life as an intriguing and profound learning experience and always deliver substantive advice. And where do they do this?  Almost always, they share their wisdom in public places, such as academic events, government events, etc, in order to motivate, inspire and inform their listeners en masse.

In addition to having a ton of experiences to share, motivational speakers are also expert communicators which is crucial for this line of work. So, it goes without saying that a motivational speaker will find it incredibly difficult to stand in front of thousands of people of all ages and share their story confidently if they lack communication skills. Due to this very reason, there are hundreds of people who never share their stories.

In short, motivational speakers deliver profound and extremely useful insights that help people improve the lives of other people.  They share their life-changing or uplifting messages in public, and they are consummate communicators.

So what do you think?  Is the business of motivation for you?  Before you answer, first check out this next section.  Knowing how much motivational speakers make, may just get you off the fence and into an auditorium.

How Much Do Motivational Speakers Earn?

So how much do motivational speakers earn you ask?  Well, bare with me, and I’ll tell you.

But first know this, a lot of people are under the assumption that motivational speakers do not earn a lot, but this is actually far from the truth. Initially, a speaker can earn from anywhere from $0-$200 per seminar. As they gain more and more experience, the demand for their insights gets bigger and bigger. Eventually, they can become certified motivational speakers, at which point, they can demand how much they wish to be paid for their lecture – many even ask for thousands of dollars and receive it.

In the end, how much you get paid depends on how renowned you become and how many people are demanding to be inspired by your words. Statistics have shown that a good motivational speaker could be making about $200,000 per year or more.

But as you’re thinking about how much money you could make as a motivational speaker, keep this quote in mind:

Motivational Speakers

In short, focus on changing the world with you words, and the money will surely follow.

How Can You Become a Successful Motivational Speaker?

As mentioned earlier, becoming a successful motivational speaker requires a lot of effort and dedication rather than just inspiring experiences. How you deliver your speeches, how original you are with your work and how many people you inspire, all have a huge role to play in your success. There are several motivational speakers that you can consider as role models before you really make it to the top yourself.

Here are a handful of some of the best:

Les Brown is one of the world’s most renowned motivational speakers.  When he speaks, people listen.  He’s already inspired hundreds of thousands of people across the world.  These days, a simple search on YouTube for motivational speeches will just about guarantee at least a handful of motivational montages containing his high energy deliveries.

Jim Rohn was known as the famous business philosopher.  His speeches were low key, but captivating.  But most importantly, his messages truly had the power to change the life of his listeners.  Truly, if you want to become a great motivational speaker, Jim Rohn is a class act worth emulating.

Eric Thomas is a great motivational speaker to model as well.  He was once a high school drop out, homeless, and heading down the wrong path in his life.  These days though, he delivers no-nonsense speeches in a tone that truly helps his audience find the breakthroughs that get them on a better path in life.

Suze Orman is another such name that has helped thousands of people pick themselves up and make better decisions in life. The 67-year-old has shared all the lessons that she has learned from her own experiences in order to help other people understand certain things and circumstances prior to making mistakes. Suze also has a good amount of experience under her belt and is one of America’s favorite author and motivational speakers.

Robin Sharma is one of the best motivational speakers to hit the stage in the last two decades. As an ex-lawyer who left his cushy office job to pursue his dream of inspiring people, his motivational speeches are life-changing.

Tony Robbins is pretty much a household name these days. He started out more or less as a sales consultant for Jim Rohn, giving uplifting speeches to small groups to attend bigger speaking engagements. To then moving on to becoming a motivational speaker himself. These days, he is still putting on high-powered motivational speeches to help people improve their performance and life.

Looking for more motivational speakers to model?  Here’s a good list to check out.

A Step by Step Guide

Modeling others will take you far, but it won’t take you all the way.  Here are a few additional resources to act as a step by step guide to help you become a motivational speaker.

First things first, if you’ve never practiced public speaking before, you’ll want to first start with something low-cost and available to just about everyone… Toastmasters.  Toastmasters will help you to quickly sharpen the delivery of your speeches and will give you the confidence to move into speaking to motivate.

This next resource is from study.com, and it is quite literally a step-by-step guide.  Give it a look, because it contains a good amount of insights to get you moving in the right direction.

Another great resource to help you become a motivational speaker is this inspiring piece by Amy Morin on how she fell into public speaking.  She provides some invaluable things anyone can do if they sincerely want to have audiences jam packing auditoriums and venues just to hear you speak.

This last resource is a simple four-step guide by Brian Tracy.  It’s short, but it gives extremely helpful steps for you to take right away if you wish to become a professional public speaker.

Final Words

Lastly, if you truly are passionate about becoming a motivational speaker, a few extra training sessions in public speaking, critical thinking and speech deliverance will help you do wonders for your career. Training is the name of the game here, which means that without training you are not going to achieve the success you are aiming for unless you are well aware of the way of the career option and all that it requires because it is anything but easy.

All in all, to become a motivational speaker you must always be honest with the people around you as well as with yourself. Although initially, you might find that your word doesn’t matter, but eventually you will find more and more success as a speaker as continually deliver and improve upon the speeches that you give.

Not only do motivational speakers make a handsome sum of money for their speeches, but they also have a lot of people who admire them, and that is the biggest reward of all. The real power of motivational speaking is to always speak from the heart, with the aim of touching the hearts of everyone who comes across your message.

So what do you say?  Are you ready to become the next legendary motivational speaker who changes peoples lives?

That was a trick question… of course you are!  Now go get it…

The world is eagerly waiting to be moved by what you have to say.

Till next time…

THE LINK BETWEEN WORK ETHIC AND SUCCESS

Published

Work Ethic and Success

Having a solid work ethic is one of the most important elements of success, regardless of the endeavor. Having a strong work ethic can lead to higher achievement in sports, your career, or your entrepreneurial pursuits. In fact, the people who have a good work ethic typically have the world at their finger tips.

Of course, some people still have their doubts as to why this is the case. Which is why we are writing this work ethic article; to clearly demonstrate the link between work ethic and success, and to give you the resources to strengthen yours. Our ultimate hope is that you’ll be able to leverage this information to find more success in all your endeavors.

Definition of Work Ethic

Before we get started, it is probably best that we first define what is a work ethic. So, here we go.

The definition of work ethic is the following; work ethic is the principle that hard work is intrinsically virtuous or worthy of reward. Work ethic is also a set of principles a person uses during training, work, or while pursuing a goal.

These principles guide the quantity and quality of one’s efforts in achieving their goals, and is typically characterized by consistency of effort to reach optimal production while maintaining an optimal quality of output.

In other words, a person who has a strong work ethic believes in the merits of working hard, and thus seeks to do so in all they do. As such, a person with a strong work ethic strives to consistently produce both the highest possible quality and quantity of effort towards their work.

Why You Should Aim to Have a Good Work Ethic

So, why should you strive to have a good work ethic? The answer is simple. Those who embrace the value of a good work ethic, almost always produce more and better results than their counterparts who have a lesser/weaker work ethic.

In addition to this, you should also strive to have a good work ethic because those who do always have the advantage over the person with a weak work ethic. For example, if a boat is sinking, 10 out of 10 times, the individual who most ardently and effectively works to reverse the sinking vessels demise, is the person who gets stay on the boat. It’s economics 101.

Certainly there will always be rare exceptions, especially when one adds a high degree of talent to the equation. However, talent alone rarely outperforms the individual with a strong work ethic in the long run. To be sure, there is much truth to the saying goes, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

The Link Between Work Ethic and Success

strong work ethic and success

This brings us to our next point. There is a direct link between work ethic and success as a strong correlation between the two exists. Is there a scientific link between work ethic and success?

Well, we’ve been studying high achievers for nearly five years now, and here is what we documented, every individual who achieved at a high level had an above average worth ethic. They didn’t all start off with a strong work ethic at first, but eventually, all of them employed a strong work ethic by default once success became their obsession.

In addition, no one in our research ever displayed or made the case for the opposite; a weak work ethic. In fact, we noticed that the stronger the work ethic, the stronger the achievements were, and the faster their success came.

Does having a strong work ethic guarantee success? No, of course not. But, it dramatically improves your chances. That said, here’s what the correlation looks like:

What Does a Good Work Ethic Look Like?

If you’ve ever wondered what a good work ethic looks like, you don’t have to look very far. Simply observe the habits of high performers and those who have achieved a high degree of success. Pay special attention to pro athletes and how they train, study star entertainers and how they perfect their craft, and observe world-class leaders like the CEO’s of some of the worlds’ biggest companies. If you do this, or just pay attention to those getting the results you want, you’ll see what a strong work ethic looks like.

Of course, we won’t make you do all the hard work. Here are a few samples of what a strong work ethic looks like:

Michael Jordan

The NBA legend Michael Jordan would always put in the time to improve his weaknesses. For example, when he didn’t make the cut for Varsity in high school, Jordan committed to proving everyone wrong. As such, he spent all his spare time in the off season improving his game.

The result? He made Varsity the next season. Similarly, when Jordan made it to the pros, he would also spend his summers taking hundreds of jump shots a day, till he perfected his shot. Jordan knew, that if he want to be the best, he would have to put in the work to be better than his competition.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Undefeated UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov wanted to achieve the title of the best in the world. As such, he would willingly put himself through the most grueling trainings. Training sessions that he intentionally made to be longer and more arduous than his competitors’ training sessions.

As such, his trainings days would consist of him waking up, training, then going to school. And after school, he would train again, then finish his studies for school, and after he would finishing up his homework, he would often train again for a third time, even if it meant training by himself.

Nurmagomedov’s training regimen and work ethic was superior to his peers, and the result was the creation of an undefeated UFC champion.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, and founder of Space X and a bunch of other successful businesses, is well known for having a strong work ethic. One of his most well known bits of advice, that he’s given to countless entrepreneurs is for them to double their efforts and aim to work two-times as hard as their competitors to succeed.

In short, his advice is this, if you want to be successful, you must have a strong work ethic. He’s says it best with the following quote, “Work hard, like, every waking hour.”

Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban is not stranger to hard work either. In fact, before he found his massive success, it wasn’t uncommon for him to be working past 2.am in the morning to ensure he know the ins-and-outs of the product software he was selling. Even to this day, Mark states that he spends a least three hours reading a day. He does this to gain an advantage, because he knows others won’t and because of the edge it will give him.

On top of this, Cuban has also been known to work for over seven years without a vacation in his start-up days. Now that is a strong work ethic, and sums up his take on work ethic best when he said, “It’s not about the money or connections. It’s the willingness to outwork and outlearn everyone.”

Tim Cook

Tim Cook is the uber-successful CEO of Apple. He’s certainly does not have the talent of Steve Jobs, but he makes up in effort and work-ethic what he lacks in natural talent. In fact, he’s quite famous within his organization for being the first in the office and always the last to leave.

In addition to this, he starts firing off emails to his employees before many of them are even awake at the ridiculously early hour of 4:30 am, and he hold staff meetings on Sundays in order to be prepared for Mondays.

Certainly, Tim Cook is not the only exception; as a CEO work ethic is something to be admired. In fact, we’d venture to say that most CEO’s have an above average work ethic (which is why they get paid the big bucks), and it’s a good reason you should strive to have one too.

Ray Lewis

Hall of Fame linebacker was no stranger to hard work. In fact, his entire ethos is based off of it. Through effort and having a unmatched work ethic, Ray Lewis managed to become one of the greatest linebackers to play the game of football.

To this day, Lewis maintains the all-time tackling record for the NFL. And this record was achieve through his work ethic. Lewis would hit the gym three times a day in the off-season, for at least 60 minutes at a time. He also watched film, film, and more film.

Ray Lewis had a laser-like focus when it came to putting in the time necessary to be great, and as a result, he became great.

BEST WARREN BUFFETT ADVICE ON SUCCESS AND LIFE

Warren Buffett Advice

In this post we review some of the best Warren Buffett advice for anyone seeking success. So, if it is value you seek, then keep reading because that is exactly what you’ll find here.

Now, if by some odd chance you’ve never heard of Warren Buffett, he is pretty much the most successful investor EVER.  His net worth is currently over $86.1 billion, he has donated over $28.5 billion to charities, and he is one of the richest people on the planet.  So, we will venture to say that he probably has some pretty good advice about finding success in life.

So, if you’re ready to learn about some of the best bits of advice straight from the mouth of Warren Buffett, let’s jump right into it.

BEST WARREN BUFFETT ADVICE ON LIFE AND SUCCESS

1. Find Your Passion

In an interview with Fortune magazine, Warrant Buffett was asked how other people can tap dance to work the way he does.  He provided the following answer as his response: “You Find Your Passion”.

Warren Buffett holds the opinion that the people who find their passion in life are lucky.   The reason he believes people are lucky when they find their passion, is because people who love what they do, end up doing that activity they love quite well.

Warren Buffet extols passion as one of the best ways to find success.  Why?  Because he understands that we live in very competitive times.

In our competitive society, if you don’t love what you do, you automatically place yourself at a disadvantage in the labor market and the market place as well.

As such, Warren Buffett’s advice to students who are just coming out of college, is to take the job that he/she would take if they were independently wealthy.   There is power in passion.

I would have to second Warren Buffet’s take on passion, because following this advice has been one of the best things we’ve ever done for our success.

Okay, on to the next piece of advice.

2. Have a Competitive Advantage

Another distilled piece of advice from Warren Buffett is the importance of having a competitive advantage.

A competitive advantage is basically any condition that allows a person, company, or country, to provide a good or service at either a lower price or in a more desirable fashion for customers, than its competitors.

Buffet conveys how Capitalism entices competitors to want to “take your castle”.  You castle being your business idea.  As such, he advises that in order to succeed in Capitalism, we must ensure we have a castle with a moat around it.

In this case, a castle with a moat is a business or person that has a durable competitive advantage.   And a competitive advantage can be anything from being a lower cost producer (Wal-Mart, China, etc..), or having more talent (Apple, Steven Spielberg) than the competition.

3. Read As Much As Possible

Warren Buffet was once asked what was most attributable to his success.  He responded that his love of reading helps.  Warren is an avid reader.  He enjoys reading so much that he’s claims to reads for at least 5 to 6 hours a day.

So what does he read?  Well, straight from his mouth, he reads at least five daily newspapers magazines, annual reports, and biographies on a daily basis.

If you are not a reader, well maybe it’s time you became one.  Especially if it were to help you gain just an ounce of the financial success Warren Buffett has had.

4. Model Success

In a speech to Florida University, Warren Buffet sent a powerful message to students about how we can acquire the positive qualities that we admire in other people.  And to do this, all we need to do is model the qualities of the successful.

He tells a story of his mentor, Ben Graham during his speech. He reveals how Ben Graham wanted to be admired just like the people he looked up to.  As such, he decided to model those people, and eventually acquired the exact same qualities they had, lending to much of his success.

To heed this bit of Warren Buffett advice on success, you can start here.  This is an excellent resource to help you model the investment qualities that has brought Warren Buffett much of his success.

5. Avoid Complacency

At an annual meeting of Coca Cola shareowners, Warren Buffett and the CEO of Coca Cola chatted about the company, business, investing, and success in general.

During that discussion, Warren Buffett suggested that he likes to study failure.  He made this statement to point out the important of being a student of history.  Warren states that he pays close attention to what causes businesses to go bad.

The reason he does this?  So he can avoid investing in companies that display traits that have led to the eventual failing of other businesses.

Buffett’s advice to avoid such failure, is for people and businesses to not lose their restlessness.  In other words, he suggests that we do not rest on our laurels if we want to continue to prosper.  We must avoid complacency at all costs.

To thrive, organizations and people need to strive to compete the same way they did when they were first starting out.  Just because an organization has risen to certain level of success, does not mean they can take their foot off of the proverbial gas pedal.

Our past successes do not guarantee our future achievements.

6. Don’t Follow The Crowd

Warren Buffett didn’t become one of the richest people alive by following the crowd. In fact, he’s become filthy rich by doing the exact opposite. As a world-class investor, he’s created his legacy by investing in companies that most people would never think to invest in. Why? Because he followed his own gut.

While most will look to their friends, others, or the crowd for what they should do when it comes to their money, Warren does the opposite. For instance, most investors will watch to see what the market is doing, and take their investing ques from its performance. For example, if the market is going up, they’ll put money in. If the market is going down, most will not put their money in, or worse, will sell their holdings.

Similarly, most people will listen to talking heads on the media about where to put their money, or what they should do when it comes to business, instead of doing the grueling research themselves on what is best to invest their time and money into. Warren Buffett’s advice on this is best summed up in the following quote…

7. Learn How to Communicate and Be Fearless

One of Warren Buffett’s best pieces of advice for people who are looking to be successful in any walk of life, is for them to learn how to communicate. Warren has stated that if people can learn how to communicate effectively and conquer their fears of public speaking, they can increase their chances of success by over 50%. In various interviews he’s given, he has also mentioned that had he not decided to conquer his fears of public speaking, he never would have been as successful as he is now.

Warren is so adamant about this, that he has chosen to hang in his office a certificate of accomplishment from Dale Carnegie’s public speaking course. This is very telling, because he hangs this certificate in particular, but neither of the certificates he has from earned from his Bachelors and Masters degrees.

So, if you want to find more success, never begrudge the money it takes to invest in learning how to communicate and conquer your fears.

Bonus Advice – Be Patient and Persist

One of Warren Buffet’s best piece of advice comes down to patience and persistence. When it comes to investing, he urges us not only to invest in great companies, but to be patient in the success those businesses will ultimately yield to you.

And the only way to do that is to persist. To keep going, to keep learning, and to keep striving to grow yourself and your investments in a safe and intelligent way.

Be patient and persist, and you will eventually succeed.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, this is some of Warren Buffett’s best advice on finding more success in life. So, if more success is what you are seeking, then embrace this advice.

Here are the key takeaways, ignore them at your own risk:

  • Follow Warren Buffett’s advice on passion
  • Find your competitive advantage
  • Become a reader
  • Model the successful (Kudos to you, that’s what you’re doing right now!)
  • Avoid complacency,
  • Don’t follow the crowd,
  • Invest in your ability to communicate confidently
  • Be Patient and Persist

Easy peasy!

Success leaves clues.  If we pay close attention, we can learn from the individuals that have risen to great heights.  Warren Buffett has accomplished quite a bit in his life time.  He is a Titan of the financial world, so when Warren Buffet gives advice, we should listen.

hard work quotes

There’s a certain ingredient to success that most high achievers give a lot of credit to for their successes.  Traces of this ingredient can be found in just about every success story.

Pick up any book on success, and this key success ingredient usually jumps out at you in the first few chapters.  Watch any documentary or read any autobiography of high achievers who have accomplished what you aspire to do, and you’ll always hear them hint at what they owe their success to.

The Success Ingredient Available To Us All…

Often, we’re even blatantly told what separates the sucessful from the unsuccessful.  Yet, we still fail to embrace this crucial success ingredient.  Perhaps, it’s because it’s too simple.  Or, perhaps it’s because it is rarely pleasant, and never easy.  And well, most people like things to be pleasant and they love when things are easy.

But success can’t be found in either of those things.  No, but it can be found in their opposites.

So, what’s the secret ingredient?

Put simply, it’s HARD WORK!

That’s right, hard work is one of the key ingredients to achievement that anyone can stake a claim in.  Working hard and having a strong work ethic is available to everyone.

Achievement is a Choice

What this means is that anyone can decide to achieve more.  It means that succeeding at a higher level is always a choice.  It means just about anyone can make up their minds to win at this thing called life by simply choosing to embrace the pain, the discomfort, and the effort that goes into that creation process known as labor.  Yes,  hard work, labor, and toil is where all success stems.

But, don’t just take our word for it.

Read these work ethic quotes from the people who have done what it takes to succeed in life.  Let them move you to new levels of intensity and action towards doing your best work.  The result can only be a stronger work ethic.  Behold:
