That said, if you’re ready to discover more about how Jeff Bezos became the e-commerce juggernaut of the 21st century, then let’s dive in:
THE JEFF BEZOS SUCCESS STORY
Jeff Bezos was born in1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to a struggling teen mother. His parent’s divorced when he was just 17 months old, but his mothered found menial work to keep the lights on and the family fed.
Bezos’ mother married again, and their life would normalize after his adopted father graduated from college and found work as an engineer in Texas.
Potentially influenced by his step-father, Bezos had a love for mechanics, machines, and especially computers. He studied computer science and electrical engineering at Princeton University.
That Beginning Career in Finance
After graduating from Princeton, Bezos found work at several firms on Wall Street, including Fitel, Bankers Trust and the investment firm D.E. Shaw. In 1990, Bezos became D.E. Shaw’s youngest vice president.
On the heels of that success and with the financial backing he needed to start his own business, he began laying the groundwork to become the entrepreneur he always wanted to be. After working four years in the finance industry, Bezos would eventually make his move by quitting his job to start his own online business.
Bezos managed to eventually launch an online bookstore and the rest, as they say is history. Because as legend has it, this small startup would grow to become the famous Amazon.com of today, even though it originally started off as a modest online bookstore.
Those who were around during Amazon’s early years remember buying new and used books and the innovation that it took to bring that formerly brick and mortar business to the world wide web. Amazon was a great starting point for Jeff Bezos and his success only grew from there.
Amazon and Cementing a Legacy
Amazon.com got it’s start on July 16, 1995, after Bezos asked 300 friends to beta test his site. It was a risky move and he was betting not only his financial investments but also his name and his reputation on his ability to build a successful company in the new and still very volatile online market.
In the months leading up to launch, Jeff and a few friends were building the software needed to run the site and operating out of a garage and basement. His dedication and determination to make it work is the stuff that inspires new entrepreneurs today to keep pressing onward with their dreams.
In the first month, the site was selling books across the US and in over 30 foreign countries. In two months, sales reached $20,000 a week, growing faster any of the team members could have envisioned. Two years later, Amazon.com went public and really started to make a name as an upstart e-commerce company.
Two years later, they proved the skeptics wrong and had not only held its ground but grown by leaps and bounds, becoming an e-commerce leader. While many business went away during the dot.com bust of the early ’90s, Amazon flourished and saw sales go from $510,000 in 1995, to $1.6 billion just four years later, to then over $17 billion by 2011.
By September 2018, Amazon was valued at more than $1 trillion, making it the second company to hit that milestone, and reaching it only a few weeks after Apple did. To this day, Amazon is still valued at a whopping $1.1 trillion.
Owner of ‘The Washington Post’
Towards the end of 2013, Bezos made headlines once again on the worldwide stage among business owners and wealthy tycoons when he purchased The Washington Post, one of the oldest and most well known news publications in the United States.
He also acquired a few additional smaller publications and included them all under the umbrella parent company for a grand total of $250 million.
Needless to say, you know you’ve made it when you begin buying historical and reputable news organizations. And indeed, by 2013 Jeff Bezos had “made it”.
Of course, Bezos was making other big moves prior to 2013. For instance, in 2000, Bezos made an entrepreneurial move once again when he founded Blue Origin. This time Jeff’s eyes were on the sky as this was an aerospace company that was set up in order to design and develop technologies aimed at make space travel accessible and affordable for more people.
For a decade and a half, the company operated quietly and once things were really kicking off, around 2017, Bezos began selling $1 billion in Amazon stock annually to fund Blue Origin to further fund and push developments of new aerospace technology.
Two short years later NASA announced that Blue Origin was one of the select few companies to being assisting with 19 technology projects designed to help NASA once again go to the moon and finally reach Mars. Today Blue Origin is making headlines for Bezos and itself with unprecedented advancements in space travel.
Stepping Down as CEO and Moving Forward
In February 2021, Amazon announced that Bezos would step down as CEO in the third quarter of the year. But this was not the end for Bezos and he still plans to be involved with the company that he helped to build, literally from the ground up.
Since stepping down, Bezos has transitioned to executive chair of Amazon’s board and continues to be highly involved with the trajectory of the company.
With that said, he shows no signs of slowing down or putting an end to the curiosity, motivation, and drive that made him into the crowning example of possibility that he has come to be known for.

HOW TO NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR GOALS AND DREAMS AGAIN
If you’re seeking some inspiration or resources to help you never give up on your goals or dreams, then this page is for you. With that said, have you ever known someone who made up their mind to finally get going on a big project, goal, or dream, but shortly after starting, they quit?
You know the scenario, the one where that friend of yours gets started on a pursuit with massive zeal. But then you learn that just a few months into their endeavor, they lose all their steam, and give up their dream.
The scenario where everything seemed to be going well for them, like their success was just around the corner, but then, they gave up too soon.
We’ve all had a friend who finally decided to do something ambitious, like start a side-hustle. They’ve been talking about these books they’ve been reading, like ‘The 4 Hour Work Week’, or the “Side-Hustle’, and how in just 4 weeks they’d be up and running with a successful business, positioned to quit their day-job, and primed to ride off into the sunset of success.
But those four weeks quickly pass, and their endeavors have yet to become a soaring success. But your friend is determined, so they stick it out for four, five, and maybe even six more months. Unfortunately, they finally realize the struggle is too much, and say to themselves, “I am not seeing any progress, and this is just to freaking hard for zero to little progress?”
Then they begin to tell you all about how maybe their side-hustle thing isn’t really what they wanted to do. So they give up, they quit, and their dream dies.
The Fitness Fizzle
Or perhaps you had a friend who finally said to themselves, “That it’s, I am going to turn this flabby body of mine into something lean! And by the end of next year, I am going to be a lean mean physically fit machine!”
Then they get to chasing their fitness goal, and they stay the course for four, maybe five months. But then, out of the blue, they tell you about how their discipline started to drift, how they are losing focus, their fire, and slowly, their desire to obtain that dream body they’ve always wanted.
Don’t even get me started on the aspiring author. Everybody and their mom wants to write a book someday. And the crazy thing is, most people get started on writing their book. They open up Microsoft Word, and start typing away for a few days. They even create a few good chapters, but then, after a few weeks of being in the weeds of authorship, the ideas start to slow, and the pangs of creativity start to kick in. Each page starts to feel like pulling teeth just to put together. And then just like that, the dream of becoming a writer takes a vacation, with a one-way ticket back to “someday isle.”
The Common Tragedy
I know… it’s tragic. But this is not an uncommon scenario. It happens all the time. It is truly a modern-day tragedy that is all too common. And it doesn’t just happen for authors, artists, and entrepreneurs. It happens to people seeking higher fitness levels, it happens to people seeking the corner office, or even that simple promotion. It happens to EVERYONE!
The problem all too many of us have when reaching for our aims, is we give up too soon. We lack determination, staying power, and the self-discipline to see our dreams through.
If you’ve known someone who this has happened to before, or if it’s happened to you, there is a now solution.
But before I give you the solution, let me tell you a little story.
The story I am about to tell you, is part of the solution.
If you understand the story, you’ll understand the solution.
You ready? Here we go….
(Disclaimer: By sharing the story below, I am in no way suggesting that one must quit their day job to pursue their dream. This story is merely an account of the path I chose, what I learned from it, and how you can gain from it. There are multiple paths to a destination, and not everyone’s path will look the same.)
An Short Strive Story
A few years ago I was an Operations Manager for a large corporate firm out of Texas. As part of the management team, we were studying a classic leadership book by Stephen Covey. The book was titled ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’, and it included an exercise that would change my life forever.
The exercise we were studying, was meant to help us create a clearer vision for our lives. The exercise had us imagine ourselves being able to witness our own funeral. It prodded us to examine how we wanted to be remembered by our friends and family at our funeral. And it was during this exercise, that I had this looming feeling. It was the feeling that I wasn’t on the right path. My gut told me that if continued down the path I was on, I wouldn’t be happy with who I’d eventually become.
I remember thinking to myself: “I don’t want to be remembered as a coward. I don’t want be remembered as a person who lacked the courage to at least try to go for what he really wanted in this life!”
It was a visceral feeling that convinced me; if I didn’t give my dream at least one last shot, I would regret it for the rest of my life.
So, it was in that moment that I became certain that the path I was on didn’t align with the vision I wanted for my life. And it was in that moment I realized I had to do something about it. So, that very next week I resigned.
I resigned from my corporate job, hedging both my career and the guaranteed income that would secure a comfortable retirement for both my wife and I. It was a scary decision to make. But, I felt if there was ever a time in my life to give my dream a shot, it would be at that moment.
So, I did what many people might consider crazy, decided to purse my dream of becoming the author, the motivator, the life-changer that I felt in my heart, that I could be.
As such, I set off on my grand journey to create a motivational business. During the first few months on this new journey of mine, I did not make a dime. But, I kept to it, I kept striving to make this dream work.
After about 6 months, I was still not making much money. The traffic to my site started to grow significantly, but I had yet to truly monetize it (make money from it), as the one book I published was not selling very well.
Nothing seemed to be working, which led to a huge dip in my enthusiasm. I started to feel frustrated and discouraged. But, I did not want to give up on my dreams. I had worked too freaking hard for them already. Plus, I didn’t want to let down all the people I was striving to motivate, so I persisted.
The 9th month mark arrived all too soon, and somehow, I was still not profitable in my endeavors. I started to have thoughts like, “What the heck is going on here!? This can’t be happening, I am doing this full-time for goodness-sake!”
I felt like I was drowning. Like there was nothing I could do to keep me from sinking. However, I was not ready for this story to end, so I decided once again to press on.
Nearly 12 months had passed, and I was still nowhere near reaching the goals I initially set for myself. But, in the middle of the next year almost a year-to-the date from when I resigned to pursue my dream, things started to change.
The money from my business started to grow. It was a trickle, but it was something. And with this little bit of success, I was happy, at least for a little while. But then something crucial happened. I became deflated like a balloon with a massive leak! And despite the recent growth, I was all of a sudden feeling like I had hit my lowest point in my pursuit in terms of motivation.
Yes, I had a bit more money coming in, yes, my traffic, my audience, and my business were growing. However, the business was not where I hoped it would be, especially considering the ridiculous amounts of effort I had already put in to it. In truth, the business was not where I needed it to be.
At my lowest point in my 12-month journey, the point where most people would quit, something happened. I had this nagging feeling that everything I was doing was for naught. I started to wonder if I was wasting my time, and that maybe the writing was on the wall. I wondered if the time had come for me to throw in the towel on this dream of mine.
It was as if every bone in my body was sapped of energy to keep going. But then, in that lowest point of the many lows experienced during this 12-month adventure, I took a deep breath, and said to myself, “I am going to keep going. It may not be in the exact same direction as I initially planned, but I am going to keep going. I am going to make this work.”
Now bear in mind, I didn’t feel like I had the physical or emotional energy to keep going at this point. But astonishingly, my mind did.
And just like that, not even a few minutes later, like a stroke of magic, a new set of brilliant ideas for my business came to me. It was an idea for both a new strategy, and a change up in my brand.
It was a magical second wind that I desperately needed. A second wind that gave new life to my goals and dreams. Suddenly, I was back in the game and on fire to keep striving. But this time around it was with much more vigor. It even felt like their was more purpose behind me than when I first got started but a year ago.
365 days after getting started on my journey, I found the clarity around my business that was missing. I gained a clearer vision for where I wanted to take it, and a better way to add value to the world. My dream found it’s footing, but it took time, some failures, and pushing past a critical breaking point.
This story is the unfolding of my STRIVE.
Those first 365 days of my venture were not a waste. They were the stepping stones of struggle and effort that needed to be set.
There is a quote that sums up the experience I had, and the journey that many of us must experience before we reach our aims, and it is this:
“Even if he fails again and again to accomplish his purpose, the strength of character gained will be the measure of his true success, and this will form a new starting point for future power and triumph.” – James AllenTweet Quote

This solution I am offering you was born from that initial experience of powering through the dip. It is a solution that can help you create a new starting point for future power and triumph. It will help you in your pursuits, be they big or small.
This solution is your stepping stone for reaching for those worthy goals that bring you most to life.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Great story, but what is the solution?”
Well my friend, the solution is this motivation journal I created to help you weather the storms that come with dream chasing.
The solution, is this STRIVE Journal!
If you are an aspiring artist, author, or entrepreneur, I know you know what it’s like to reach for those dreams of yours. I know what it is like being on the verge of quitting. You may have even quit already, I don’t know. But, what I do know is this, that if you give your aspirations the time and effort to become a living thing… your success is guaranteed.
Every time you say no to giving up on your goals, you are saying yes to your dreams. As as a result, you inch yourself closer and closer with each courageous push.
So if you’re wondering, “Well how is this journal going to help me or my friend who may be struggling to keep their dream alive?”
Here is how my friend…..
How This Motivational Journal Will Help You Learn…
First and foremost, you must know this motivation journal is meant to help you persist until you get to your second wind. But not just to your second wind, but also to your third, your fourth, and every other wind there after until your reach your goal. The journal is meant to help you keep going. It is meant to keep you striving long enough to realize the success you seek.
If you’re wondering, “But how does it do this?” Here’s how:
Builds Momentum with 365 Days of Encouragement
Goals take time to accomplish, but most people don’t realize this. In fact, most people don’t truly understand how long a worthy goal can actually take to create some momentum around. As such, we’ve designed this journal to give you the encouragement you need to move the needle forward. And to do so for a long enough period of time for you to actually experience the results you’re after.
We are in it for the long haul, and this journal strives to ensure you are too.
Zero-in On What You Really Want
This journal helps you zero-in on what you really want from life, and then it forces you to remind yourself every single day (see high performance habits below). Why every single day? Because, when you consistently remind yourself why you are getting out of bed every morning, you’ll be less likely to deviate from your desired end. Plus, when you finally convince (program) yourself what it is you are really working towards, you’ll become unstoppable!
After you set up that one big goal that drives everything you do, the journal will also guide you in setting quarterly goals. Each quarterly goal is a stepping stone that will eventually lead you to your main aim, your STRIVE!
365 Personal Messages to Strengthen Your Drive to Strive
The Strive Journal also includes 365 recorded messages to help you stay motivated. Each message is unique to each day of your Strive. Each message will encourage you to keep moving forward!
Just like ole Rocky Balboa said…
“It ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!”Tweet Quote
The Strive Drive is the drill sergeant you’ve always secretly wanted! It’s the drill sergeant that will get you to take action, without getting spit in your face!
Action Based Motivation Journal
Look, your dreams don’t have a chance in hell at becoming a reality if you don’t work for them. That’s why this journal includes a built-in accountability model to help you keep track of your daily efforts. If you want to reach your biggest goals, it is going to take hours of consistent effort, 24/7/365. Your dream deserves at least a few hours every day, if it is going to someday grace you with its attainment.
And that is why this journal is so great! It will ask you to do something every day to keep you moving closer to your goals, and it will score you for the effort you put in. If you really want to reach your goals, a consistent push to do something every single day is necessary.
To Do Lists
This Strive Journal also acts as daily planner. It has a daily To Do List included on each page of the journal.
The To Do List is modeled off one of the most effective strategies for daily goal completion, the 1-3-5 Rule. The premise of this rule is to focus on prioritizing your daily tasks, by getting you to complete at least 1 BIG goal, 3 Medium sized tasks, and 5 little things each day.
By applying this rule to your To-Do strategy, you will be able to supercharge your ability to do the daily tasks that need to get done for you to reach your aims.
High Performance Habits
I’ve been studying successful people for over a decade now, and the one thing all of them had in common, were great habits. To help you kickstart some habits that will usher you into becoming a high performing goal attainment machine, this journal has laid out a few habits that you should practice daily. By doing so, you will level up your abilities to reach your goals.
The journal has a checklist of daily activities that it highly suggests you do, and provides you with the best time of day to do them. Because if you do these activities, you will begin doing the same practices that a great many success gurus, leaders, and high achievers do.
If you’re wondering, “But I don’t want to be a success guru, or the next Richard Branson, why should I do these high-performance habits?”
Here is why. The one reason why you should want to do as they do, is because they are masterful goal achievers. They have a proven track record of achieving their goals.
And if there is one thing this journal is trying to do, it is ultimately to help you reach your goals, your dreams. The journal will help you achieve the goal that keeps you up at night.
The Purpose of This Motivation Journal
I am going to say it again. The purpose of this journal is to keep you going. I will help you never give up on your goals. Your dreams, goals, and ambitious endeavors deserve time to incubate. And in order for them to do so, you need to be able to overcome the biggest obstacle to success… giving up too soon!
Now most people don’t have the luxury of quitting their job to pursue their dream full time, like I did. Which can actually make giving up too soon even likelier.
I was fortunate enough to do so initially, because of some great investments I made in real estate. On top of that, I’ve had some luck with my first internet business, which provided some helpful cashflow to fund my endeavors.
That said, I’ve even had to go back to work a couple of times since first publishing this journal, but that didn’t mean I failed. Nor did it mean I gave up. I just meant I had to pivot a few times. But, that’s what’s great about this journal, it helps you keep your eye on the prize, regardless of the obstacles your face.
And because I didn’t quit, I’ve since managed to grow this site by over 232% year over year for the past five years, more than quadrupled my revenue, inspire and motivate over 2 million people, and transform this site into one of the top motivational sites on the web.
So, long story short….

JEN SINCERO’S STORY OF SUCCESS
Jen’s Early Years
Jen Sincero’s story starts like many other middle-class Americans. She was born in 1965 in Westchester, New York, and was raised by middle-class Italian immigrant parents. Despite a fairly run-of-the-mill childhood, she was always an alternative force and a bit of a rebel.
She was drawn to the arts and graduated with a liberal arts degree from Colorado College in 1987. Her love of music drew her to work with Epic Records in the early 1990s as a marketing director. She was also a part-time singer in an all-girl punk band called Crotch that wrote irreverent, fast-paced punk rock.
These endeavors helped Jen to find her voice and confidence as a young woman in her twenties. She moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to continue working on various musical projects.
Challenges In The Writing World
Sincero moved to Los Angeles, California, in 2000 with aspirations to become a freelance writer. She pieced together a living through a variety of odd jobs while working on her writing career.
Times were tough and she was living in a rented garage while earning under $30,000 a year, a salary that is hardly sustainable in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
At the age of 40, Jen began to wonder, “Is this it?” She was tired of being broke and was desperate to make a change.
This is where Jen’s story takes a turn. Instead of giving up, she took massive action toward her goal of becoming a successful writer. She started reading self-help books and taking courses on business and personal development.
One way that she empowered herself into taking bold career moves was by making the decision to hire a coach. She had heard a motivational speaker on stage that caught her attention, and could hardly believe it when she heard that this woman charged 1/3rd of Sincero’s annual income to work with.
At this pivotal moment, Jen had a choice. She could either say that she didn’t have the money to pay for a high-profile coach, or, she could start looking for ways to raise money for this cause.
She chose the latter and saved up the money to work with her dream coach. This was a turning point for Jen, as this experience helped her to transform her life. Within three months, she had tripled her income, and within a year, she had quit her day job to pursue her writing career full-time.
Jen Sincero’s Big Breakthrough
Jen’s first full-length publication was “Don’t Sleep With Your Drummer”. This semi-autobiographical book detailed her years as a struggling musician in Albuquerque. It was published in 2003 by MTV books to little fanfare but got her on the map as a writer.
Despite the lack of success with her first book, Jen didn’t give up on her writing dreams. She continued to work hard, honing her craft and refining her voice. Her second book, “The Straight Gift’s Guide to Sleeping With Chicks” became a national best-seller.
This book’s success led to more opportunities, and Jen began writing for magazines and online publications. She also started giving talks and workshops on the topics of business and personal development.
This momentum slowly formalized into a coaching business, which Jen has been running since 2008.
Years of working with individuals who needed a helping hand to get to the next level in their lives built a landmine of experience for Sincero and resulted in Jen writing her most famous book, “You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life.”
This New York Times Best-Selling book has helped people all over the world change their lives for the better. It is considered one of the most influential self-help books of our generation and has sold over 5 million copies to date while hitting #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list.
She then went on to write “You Are a Badass at Making Money”, “You Are a Badass Everyday”, and “Badass Habits” digging deeper into specific topics that her readers were struggling with.
Jen’s self-help books take a different approach than other traditional books in the genre. They are funny, relatable, and easy to read while still packing a powerful punch of motivation and inspiration.
You can still hear the punk rock in Jen Sincero’s writing, and that’s what her readers love about her. She tells it like it is and doesn’t sugarcoat the tough parts of life. This lets other creatives living near the poverty line know that hitting a 7-figure lifestyle filled with fulfillment and meaning is accessible to us all.
Jen Sincero’s Impact On The World
Jen has made it her life’s mission to help people empower themselves and reach their highest potential. She does this by sharing her story, teaching proven strategies, and providing actionable advice that her readers can implement in their own lives.
She does so with humor, honesty, and even a pinch of humility, to bring concepts that were once reserved for the self-help elite to the masses.

We believe every story contains subtle lessons that can inform, guide, and ultimately help us live a more successful life. So, if you’re ready to learn more about how Serena Williams, and how she became the success icon we’ve all come to know and love, then let’s dive in.
THE SERENA WILLIAMS STORY OF SUCCESS
Serena Jameka Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on September 26, 1981. She is the youngest of five sisters: Venus Williams, Isha Williams, Yetunde Price, and Lyndrea Lynch.
Serena began playing tennis at the age of four and quickly showed signs of greatness. She always strived for perfection, no matter what the cost. The family moved to Compton, California, and Serena’s father, Richard Williams, became her first coach during their time living on the west coast.
He helped her develop a powerful serve and an aggressive playing style that would become her trademark. Serena’s sister Venus also began to play tennis around this time, and the two would often compete against each other in practice matches.
Her father moved the family from Compton to West Palm Beach, Florida, when Serena was nine years old, so that she and her sisters could train at the Rick Macci Tennis Academy. It was there that she met Rick Macci, who would become her coach and mentor.
Rick Macci was blown away by Serena’s talent and potential, but he was also impressed by her work ethic and dedication to the sport.
The Tough Road to Professional Success
Williams turned professional in October of 1995, just shy of her fourteenth birthday. She made her professional debut at the Bell Challenge in Quebec City, where she lost in the first round. The following year, she made her Grand Slam debut at the 1996 US Open but was again defeated in the first round.
Her parents had wanted her to wait until she was 16 to go pro, but Serena was determined to do the best she could as early as possible.
However, this eventually wore down the young athlete, who was sick of working so hard to win and never producing the results.
In 1997, at the age of 16, Serena and her partner Max Mirnyi won the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Championship, defeating Martina Hingis and Stefan Edberg in the final. This was a huge accomplishment for Serena, as she became the first African American woman to win a Wimbledon title since Althea Gibson in 1957.
She and her sister Venus also won two more Wimbledon doubles titles in the same year.
She was ranked #20 in the world by the end of 1997, a tremendous increase from her previous year’s ranking of #99.
Williams was so inspired by her performance that she claimed that she could even beat male tennis players. Although she didn’t succeed at this in a mixed-gender match in 1998, she gave her all to an incredible match that defied the norms that existed in tennis at the time.
Serena Williams’ Rise to Fame
The following year, 1999, would be even more successful for Williams. She won her first singles Grand Slam title at the US Open, defeating top-ranked Martina Hingis in the final. This made her the first African American woman to win a major in the open era at the young age of 17.
Media attention followed and Serena was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, among other magazines. However, with fame came criticism, and many accused Williams of playing fixed-match games conspired by her father.
These claims were eventually proven to be false, but they took a toll on Serena’s mental state. This, paired with an injury she sustained the following year and losing the US Open to her sister Venus, led to a temporary slump in her game.
The young girl who never gave up came back stronger than ever in 2002, winning the Italian Open, French Open, Wimbledon Open, and U.S. Open. She also went on to compete in Australia and flawlessly won this match as well. This made Serena the first woman to ever hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time, a true feat in the tennis world.
This became known as the “Serena Slam”, and she was rightfully hailed as the best tennis player in the world.
Challenges At the Top
In 2002, Serena’s parents decided to divorce, creating turmoil in her personal life. Even worse, her sister Yatunde Price suddenly passed away from a shooting in Compton in 2003. The two sisters were close and Yatunde also served as Serena’s personal assistant.
Despite these tragedies, Serena managed to remain focused on her tennis career. The following year, she won the Australian Open and became the first woman in history to win three straight Grand Slam titles since 1988.
However, physical ailments coupled with untreated emotional problems began to take their toll, leading to a number of early exits from tournaments throughout 2005.
Williams took some time off to focus on her health and made a charity trip to Africa in 2007. This real-time experience in an underdeveloped country made her realize how fortunate she was and how much she needed to use her public image to raise the voices of people of color, particularly black women, throughout the world.
With plenty of restoration and a new passion for tennis, she returned to the courts in 2008 and began to work with Mackie Shilstone, a well-known performance coach. She went on to win at the Beijing Olympics that year and many tournaments in the years that followed.
However, at the US Open in 2009, Serana’s anger got the best of her and she was fined for verbal abuse after throwing her racquet and yelling at a line judge.
This led to a two-year suspension from the tournament, but Serena came back stronger than ever in 2010.
However, that January a pulmonary embolism was found in her lungs and she was off the courts dealing with health issues for yet another year.
Staying At the Top
While most athletes would retire or give up after all that Serena had been through, she continued to train and went on to win two gold medals at the 2012 London Olympics.
By the age of 31, Serena Williams became the oldest female tennis player ranked at #1. At 33 she won her 20th grand slam victory.
Sports Illustrated named Williams as the “Sportsperson of the Year”, making her the first woman awarded this title since 1983. She showed the world that she was a champion both on and off the court.

So, if you believe success leaves clues, and you want to learn a few success insights from Denzel’s inspiring story, let’s dive right in.
THE DENZEL WASHINGTON SUCCESS STORY
Youth and Challenges
Denzel Washington was born in Mount Vernon, New York City, in 1953, on December 28th. The street he grew up on was on the edge of Westchester and the Bronx, a lower-class neighborhood that surrounded him with crime, drugs, and violence.
When he was 14 years old, he dealt with the struggle of seeing his parents going through a painful divorce, leaving his mother with him and his two siblings. He had moments of involvement with gangs and getting into fights, but his mother pushed him to stay on the right path.
Despite the challenges he faced, Denzel persevered. His mother ensured a better future for her son by sending him to the military academy in New Windsor. This pivoted the young man from a life of aimlessness to one of curiosity, where he would seek to find answers to find out where he fit into the world.
The Search for Self Identity
Washington pursued several different paths before he found his calling as an actor. In high school, he joined the football team and was the quarterback. He continued to play football in college, and also joined the basketball and baseball teams as well.
Denzel used sports as a way to find community and learn the power of achievement, which had begun in his childhood days as a regular member of the Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx. However, he discovered that a professional path in sports was not for him.
His interests in biology and chemistry didn’t pan out after taking a challenging course called “Chordate Morphogenesis”, a daunting topic that didn’t attract his interest.
Political science was his next attempt, as he thought it would allow him to make a difference in the world as a lawyer. This got the young man interested in hearing the stories of others, leading him into the field of journalism.
At this point, Washington realized he was working his way into the field of art.
During a summer position as a camp counselor at the YMCA, he had his first experience performing in front of an audience when he was asked to put on a show for the kids.
His natural charisma and stage presence was undeniable. A fellow camp counselor recommended that he pursue acting, and Denzel took his first steps into the world of performing arts.
With a GPA of 1.7, he had nothing to lose and a spark of talent to follow, leading to one of the most successful Hollywood careers of all time.
From Amateur to Professional
When Washington returned to college after the summer, he immediately transferred to Fordham University’s theater department to study acting. His first role was in the play “Othello”, and he would go on to have successful performances in many more theatrical productions.
When preparing for the role of Othello in the play, one of his most influential teachers gave him a piece of advice that he carried on for the rest of his life: “Less acting is always more”.
After a rich and successful college career in theater, Washington made the transition to film with his first movie role in “Wilma” in 1977 and “Carbon Copy” in 1981.
On the set of Wilma, he met his present wife, Pauletta Pearson, who became a major beacon of support and stability during his early Hollywood years.
He then received a major break on television when he was cast as Dr. Phillip Chandler on NBC’s hospital series”St. Elsewhere”.
Despite being on the show for 6 seasons, the executive producer, Bruce Paltrow, graciously allowed him to leave the production three times to film the movies “A Soldier’s Story”, “Power”, and “Cry Freedom”.
Washington states that if he wasn’t allowed this creative freedom, he wouldn’t have become the actor he is today. Paltrow later said of Washington: “He was the kind of actor who came along once in a generation”.
A Star is Born
After his time on “St. Elsewhere”, there was no question that Denzel Washington was a star. He had leading roles in many movies, including “Malcolm X”, “Philidelphia”, “The Pelican Brief”, “The Bone Collector”, and “The Hurricane”.
In the year 2000, Denzel Washington won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor due to his exceptional performance in the film “The Hurricane”. The last African American actor who won a Golden Globe was Sidney Poitier in 1963, making him the first black actor in 37 years to receive the honor.
This was a huge stepping stone in Washington’s career, as he was now being seen as a serious contender for Hollywood’s top awards.
And in 2002, his dreams came true when he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in “Training Day”. He has since been nominated for three more Academy Awards and has won a total of two Golden Globes.
While Denzel Washington’s story is one of rags-to-riches, he hasn’t forgotten his roots. He has given back to many different charities over the years, including the Boys and Girls Club of America, The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, to name only a few.
He has also donated back to the college that fostered his love of acting, Fordham University. He has donated $2 million dollars to the theater program as well as $250,000 to create a scholarship program for young actors attending the school.
In 1991, the university gifted him an honorary doctorate degree. Morehouse College similarly provided him with an honorary Doctorate of Humanities in 2007, and the University of Pennsylvania provided him with an honorary Doctorate of Arts in 2011.
